Police made 18 arrests at a demonstration in the centre of Helsinki Thursday evening, May Day Eve. The protest against income differences turned unruly, with many demonstrators throwing bottles at police. Some of those arrested were underage.

Teuvo Saikkonen of the Helsinki Police estimated that about 1,000 people took part in the march, and a few dozen demonstrators behaved in a disorderly fashion, throwing bottles and dabbing property with paint. Some of the demonstrators had covered their faces.

The protests, which involved three separate marches which converged in front of the headquarters of the Confederation of Finnish Industries in the South Harbour.

What does cannabis have to do with May Day eve :s?' Workers need to get high on may day or something o_O?
I only saw the seemingly peaceful Left-wing Youth march of maybe 30 people followed by 8 police cars and a bus or something :P

I think this was from yesterday. And these marches took place in some 200 other cities worldwide.

(Btw, this article from Time got me proud Pop quiz: Which European country has the most liberal drug laws? (Hint: It's not the Netherlands.))

wow holy ** tho,

"...in 2001 became the first European country to officially abolish all criminal penalties for personal possession of drugs, including marijuana, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine."

I don't think legalising cocaine would be very cool. I think the reason they took that action, as explained in the article, was they thought it was already very prevalent and they didn't want to keep it underground. But I think its really good how they created rehab programs instead of jail time, because it makes it easier for people to admit they have a drug problem and get help.
