We're down that way in a few weeks so might pop by if we get a chance...depends cos going to helsinki is such a big, big adventure for us and we get very excited and have tons of things on our 'to do list'.

One picture which cracks me up is of a guy standing up to fish from one of these. Are they really that stable? I don't see how. Maybe they snapped the camera shutter quickly, right befoe he went facefirst into the drink!?

Yes, they are! That's the brilliant thing about the sit on top, they are very stable, and the wider models especially. IIRC, ocean kayak has one designed to do double sporting duty: hold two sea fisherman, plus large cooler or, alternately, two divers with all the tanks etc. (start completely volontary plug here, BTW not affiliated in anyway with store or manufaturer ) Ocean Kayak is a very good brand, one of the originators in sit on tops. Should last ages and ages too. (end commercial plug!)

I'd agree on that. Our Ocean Kayak seems close to indestructible and yet it is so light (even I can lift it almost on my own) and stable and FAST. I go out on the lake with the dog.... she jumps on and off the kayak (diving for water lilies ) and it never capsizes. To be honest, I haven't tried fishing off it (we have a double-hulled canoe we use for that) but it's a good idea, might try next time I'm at the mökki.

We're looking for a kayak at the moment, a first one so really not sure what to buy but going to talk to these guys at some point, in Siuro, close to Tampere - http://www.erakettu.com/index.php?section=1

If anyone has any tips on buying a first kayak, they'd be more than welcome. Took a 2-day course at the sports college here two years ago and not been since then but I'd love to start off again.
