What would be a good gift to bring from the USA to Finland?
What would be a good gift to bring from the USA to Finland?
Just a little hello gift to my hosts whom I will be staying with for a night. Any ideas?

Bring an American coffee that should do. For a hint, a couple of euros costing coffee below.Meeowie wrote:Just a little hello gift to my hosts whom I will be staying with for a night. Any ideas?

Cheapo/pricey as you wish

Depends on your hosts tastes and what you perceive of them:
Good Californian wine
Some good electronics items
Good Chocolates
souvenir from where you come from
Starbucks to go "mugs"

Fudge
I was going to suggest something exotic candy like Reese's Peanutbutter Cups. We really don't have that kind of candy here. Peanutbutter... yeah, but like I buy it only to make satay sauce. The coffee mugs are an idea... theres never one too many...

Coffee as a gift to a host family in Finland is quite common (or a custom?) AFAIK. So, this host family might as well be delighted that a foreigner knows their customDavid Rönnqvist wrote:I would not buy coffee. They have coffee in Finland. It is a basic foodstuff, and so it would strike me as insulting to come with a famine bag of basic foodstuffs.

On a second thought, Raamv's suggestions do sound swell!

Last time I went, this past New Year's, I brought a couple 1 pound bags of beef jerky. Pretty standard stuff, not the cheap garbage you get from gas stations or an average grocery store, just ordered from Amazon. I also brought a new Zippo lighter. The lighter was for a father & mother of a friend that I had stayed with the previous trip and then a night this time as well. They seemed to like that alright. The beef jerky? They got a bag and seemed ecstatic. I gave the other bag to a friend who let me stay in his apartment for about a week and a half of my trip. He ate the entire contents in a 24 hour period, aside from giving his girlfriend a single piece (she didn't care for the stuff). Everyone that tried it save for her thought it was some kind of amazing invention.

I remember giggling myself silly back when I was working at the hotel, there was this tiny pink-haired lady from US coming from touring Russia with a huge suitcase - it bursted open and it was filled with bogrolls.
But yeah, the coffee is "different" in the USA. Something like Blue Mountain isn't that obtainable here - problem is though you need to remember we either boil in a pot - but not many have coffee pots any more, or then make filter coffee.

When I read bogrolls I envisioned something like this:David Rönnqvist wrote:Don't worry, Argie, there is nothing to stop you using bogroll as an ingredient in cakes.

Yummy!
