Best Finnish Movies Ever? Nominations?
Best Finnish Movies Ever? Nominations?
How about two categories, art and entertainment.
I'll start it off with a nomination.
Art: Ihmiselon ihanuus ja kurjuus
Entertainment: (blank)
I'd also give an honorable mention to the 1984 Niskavouri. Somehow it was directed in a lighter, more entertainment-oriented vein than IIJK, even though they're both Kassila's. Niskavuori is maybe not quite art cinema but neither is it only entertainment. I suppose the intent was to appeal to a wider demographic. Didn't Kassila also direct Jäähyväiset presidentille? He's certainly wasn't stuck in a single style.
Kinosto and others need some serious help with their U.S. marketing. The Finnish movies that get sent to the states are mostly ill-chosen for this market. No Kaurismäki is ever going to thrive in the broader art-theater circuit here. They die after short runs in New York and maybe one or two other cities. Niskavuori would still do quite well today, even though the age of nostalgia for that era has mostly passed. Ihmiselon might also do quite well. Trying to sell Tuntematon sotilas over here was a huge and entirely foreseeable mistake. European movies of less substance and quality than some Finnish films regularly do well on the US art-theater circuit, which is substantial -- possibly bigger than the entire domestic Finnish market. Finnish distributors just send the wrong stuff.

As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

Matti Nykänen. Even though he’s now better-known from tabloid headlines, he was a several-times world champion and Olympic gold medalist as a ski jumper back in the 1980s. The 2006 movie was simply called Matti (IMDB); I haven’t seen it myself.david.connoll wrote:i really liked the movie about the finnish sky jumper matti ,if thats his name,he s always in the papers now still

I usually despise Artsyfartsy movies, but maybe this one is enough to make Flower hatted aunties cry, so in art category I nominate:
The Foetus
To the entertainment category I shall nominate the first Finnish movie that really was entertaining and worth a second look:
Häjyt
Maybe we should also make "Classics" category, where everyone nominates Tuntematon Sotilas

The Foetus
"abuse and torture of women and children"
Sounds awesome...And you don't like art movies...with themes like that how can't you?
I'll have to give them a try. I've hardly seen any finnish films...language issue. And when I pick something up I usually go with something I really want, not something tha tI want to 'check out'.

I liked the "levotomat" although the sex scene almost looked real. I guess they really did it when making the movie huh.....just my thoughts,
If you wish to convince people of something, it is more useful to be entertaining than to be right
Re: Best Finnish Movies Ever? Nominations?
He also did some "artistic films about human reproduction" and has decent sized organ for that, or was it only magazineJukka Aho wrote:Matti Nykänen.
