Help me pick a Finnish name for my boat

Post by honkanen » Thu May 14, 2009 6:07 pm

I just got a 27' sailboat and am trying to think of a good Finnish name for it. Any suggestions guys? Some funny or interesting Finnish word. I was thinking something like Tuulen Rakastajatar (Wind Lover/Mistress) but that's too long probably. Don't want to call a Mayday with spitting that word out! lol Maybe "kesa tuuli" (summer breeze/wind)? Not sure...

Kesätuuli is a compound word and the word kesä should have the dots above the a. You could also use the word suvi instead of kesä: Suvituuli. It means the same but has more “traditional” ring to it. Coincidentally, both Suvi and Tuuli are also used as Finnish female first names.

As for two-part names, such as Tuulen rakastajatar, well, why not... Stylistically you could debate whether it is correct to capitalize both words in Finnish or not. (For example, newspaper headlines, titles of books, company names, names of songs, etc. should not usually have Initial Caps except for their first word in Finnish...)

Sympaatti

(I used to sing that song in a choir as a kid.."sym...sym...sym -paatti..." :) )

Just spoke to my Finnish buddy here. He seems to like Kesätuuli. If you think of anything else, let me know! Thanks for the help guys! :-)

I like Suvituuli! (But then I'm an old fart. :) )

I'd agree that Suvituuli sounds nicer than Kesätuuli. Things that Suvituuli brings to my mind: cruiser, wine, women, beer, 4 knot sh1tbox (in a good way), mount gay (ok, any rum, but this seems to be the thing in NA), the jolly crew that finish second to last but still have most fun...

lol k, now Suvituuli is sounding better. ;-) There's something about the double-dots making Kesätuuli look more "exotic" though. Hmm... decisions. To bad my wife won't let me name it Blow Me. I mean, come on.. it's a sailboat, that's fitting. lol

In my not so humble opinion: at 27' it is too small for that name :P

Well it wasn't meant as a bad thing lol Maybe it just means the wind needs to blow the sails to get it going, hence, Blow Me. Okay, okay, maybe there's somewhat of a double-meaning. ;-)

Suvituuli - also because you need to register it as Kesatuuli otherwise and that means itching scabs in the wind...

Are you serious? LOL I didn't see that definition anywhere for any type of combination of those words. So, kesa means itch/scab but kesä means summer?

Yup, I had same thoughts as P about customs and border guards/whatever and their flexibility to funnily named vessels... we shall see how much our friends in the east chat at us when we are rounding Suursaari during Espoo-Suursaari race, always good fun to be targeted by patrol boat ;)

kesanto is a fallow field, kesiä as a verb is to shed skin... Kesa is not a "word" but it obviously means something that comes off a kesanto... so I don't know... bad vibes man... suvituuli = no bad vibes
