why Finns divorce?
Re: why Finns divorce?
I always though is was due to the fact that Finland has a low population so chances are they marry someone who they do not exactly have much or anything in common with... years pass by... things go sour they start talking to forgeiners and finally realize they never had much in common with their 'lover' then, presto... the Finn decides to get a divorce and start dating a forgeiner.
Re: why Finns divorce?
And Finns have SO much in common with foreigners who do not even share same cultural background?
Yeah, that is likely.
At point where Finns divorce, men get brides from Russia or poor Asian countries. To get humble and pretty (much) younger partner. (who shall divorce them once they have citizenship).
Women go to Turkey, Morocco or other similar, meet young, well tanned beach lion who whispers words of love to her ear. Woman falls madly in love, imports their beach lion to Finland and end being divorced once guy gets citizenship and imports wife for himself from his country of origin.
Finns divorce because we CAN. There is no huge social stigma on divorce. It is business as usual unlike in some more religious states where divorce is huge issue.

Bingo jetset, spot on Mr Tiwaz!
But be careful what you say, because in "modern" Europe there are some things that you're just now allowed to say...

Re: why Finns divorce?
Finland has a high divorce rate because the dissolution of marriage becomes more lenient. The Finnish court no longer identify to which party will obtain divorce. Today, you can file divorce in a jiffy if one of the partners applies for divorce. The divorce becomes official after six months from the date of application. Also, the spousal support laws in Finland follow the concepts of "maintenance liability."
With regard to marrying foreigners, I've heard from news that 6.5 percent of Helsinki’s population was foreign. According to sociologists, the lowering standards in marriage and family prompts Finnish men and women to marry foreigners. Also, according to some experts, a Finnish spouse is often a "bridge between cultures."

Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts
Re: why Finns divorce?
I wonder what these sociologists actually mean, if they say that... I was under the impression that most people still marry someone they fall in love with, not merely because he/she is "foreign" (or "Finnish" for that matter)badeth wrote:With regard to marrying foreigners, I've heard from news that 6.5 percent of Helsinki’s population was foreign. Just a while ago I also spotted the term nahkakantinen sanakirja (leather-bound dictionary) - referring to one of the uses that a Finnish-speaking spouse can be put tobadeth wrote:Also, according to some experts, a Finnish spouse is often a "bridge between cultures."

Re: why Finns divorce?
One 'woman' manages to do that 3 times with three different foreigners and children from at least 2 of them. She even made it to the HS because of this 'achievement'. I must be old fashionedTiwaz wrote:And Finns have SO much in common with foreigners who do not even share same cultural background?

An old one but....
As Bush said:
"There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."

I think Finn women are cute enough (of course not all of them, but many of them)! Can't complain

Re: why Finns divorce?
Compare to their Russian, Balkan and Centeral Asian counterparts? I trend to disagree...Hae wrote:I think Finn women are cute enough (of course not all of them, but many of them)! Can't complain

Re: why Finns divorce?
I think the main factor at play here is just extreme individualism.Finns don't divorce because they can,as somebody said.Divorce is not something new and exclusive to Finland...Finns divorce because they cannot stand the discomfort that comes from living with another person, that's all.Because if you don't know how to even start a conversation with your husband/wife,how the hell are you going to live with a person that you barely know, despite the fact that you maybe met him/her 15 years ago?
Re: why Finns divorce?
Depends on what one defines as a foreigner, but if it includes all the people who have as a registered native thongue something else than FInnish, Swdish or Saami (= assumed different cultural background) then that number is Helsinki is already almost 10% and somewhere around 13% among people between ages 20 to 40 years.badeth wrote: With regard to marrying foreigners, I've heard from news that 6.5 percent of Helsinki’s population was foreign.
Re: why Finns divorce?
One reason is that your "somebody" is likely wrong. Probably somebody else had looked on divorce and marriage numbers of some individual year and thought you can make such a claim from their relative numbers. You can not because for example people getting divorced in 2009 is not a subset of people getting married in the same year.love_not_war wrote:Someone told that around 54% of couples in Finland file for divorce ? What are the reasons ?
What you can do is to follow how large fraction of people married on year X have divorced so far:
http://www.stat.fi/til/ssaaty/2008/ssaa ... 03_fi.html
number of divorces/1000 marriages

Time since the start of the marriage, the number next to curve is the year when the marriage took place
- and while apparently marriages that began around 1980 or later will likely eventually have more than 40% of them ending in divorce, I don't think figures above 50% are supported by data, especially since the 'prognosis' has not really got any worse for newer marriages since year 1990.
