Hi,
We asked for a place in the public day-care and just got a reply that all the päiväkoti and child-minders in our sector are full... I am very stressed as they took 2 months to give us the answer and I am due back to work end of July.
So we're now considering putting Aaron in a private day-care. It doesn't need to be in English, Finnish is perfect as well.
Anybody knows of private places that takes 1 yr-olds?
Kiitos

The thing is, not to accept the rely. The law states that they must provide you with daycare. (Although to start with you'll probably end up with somewhere at the other end of Helsink...)

That's the thing... We don't really want him to be too far. We live in Lehtisaari, my daughters attend the French school in Lehtisaari, husband works in the centre and I will be working close to the centre too.

We gave the papers 4 months before thinking it'll be ok. But it looks like in any case the päivökoti here has been full for years (the kids stay there from 1 to 6 and then they take the sibblings so there's never free place). Then the other one we asked is full too and that is a huge one (the one just after Kuusisaari on the hill, old wooden house or mansion as it is that big).

Also, as we live close to Espoo (just have to cross the bridge

) is it possible to ask Espoo for a place? Or you can only use your place of residence?

I live in the countryside, so the situation is a little bit different, but as far as I understood things (our son is starting daycare in August too). If you have applied according to the rules (so 4 months beforehand - which you have done, as I understand), they should provide you with daycare. If the public system is full, they should try to find you a place anyway, also if it is private. Here the private goes via the public system. AND your child can only go to another community via special permission.
I hope you find a place soon.
Here they have promised me a place close to home (read 100m) which is amazing in Finland. And it is a daycare group, just what I had hoped for. But again I live in the countryside + in a village where 50% of the kids are born of the whole community. They will built a new school here + daycare in 2010!
Good luck!

Pour l'école il est possible (entre Espoo et Helsinki mais pas entre Vantaa et Helsinki). Par contre les garderies dépendent des affaires sociales (pas l'éducation) donc il se pourrait que ca....... merde - I'm tired
You get the gist. For schools yes, but not sure about daycare. I doubt it, and I don't think the situation is any easier in Espoo. You could call these people and ask:

Hi, it is true that it's very difficult to get a place in public day care. we live in Espoo karakallio, I try to find a place for my daughter in the public day care near my home, I have applied twice which means 8 months but still couldn't get a place... I'm back to work and now my parents help me to take care of her, I plan to send her to day care in Auguest. Then I decided to try private day cares. there are many private day care places, you need to call to every place and ask if they have free places left. I finally find a place near Lepäävaara and visited the place, it looks nice and tearchers are friendly expect that they don't speak English...
But hope you will find your place. good luck!

I tried one but the lady said evven if it is private we need to fill in the päivähoitohakemus form from Espoo city. Seeing we are not resident of Espoo will be a problem according to her.

There was just a new rule about kids on the boarders being allowed to go to daycare in the neigbouring muncipility. The only problem is Espoo is full, there are no places. But I had this situation this time last year, I just called the decision makers weekly and called all the private daycare places in the area, in the end I went from no places to having a choice! Keep trying, you'll get something, we did and I needed places for 3 kids and I insisted in was in the same place! Good luck.
