Midsummer bonfire at Seurasaari

Post by Amandine.K » Fri Jun 12, 2009 10:24 pm

Hi,

I just read about the bonfire at Seurasaari and was wondering if anybody here went to see it in the past.

On wikipedia, it states that there are 1000's of people coming to see it, is that so? Do we have to expect drunken people like Kaivopuisto during Vappu?

Also what is the exact date? Around what time?

Kiitos! :)

Yes, there should be a lot of people there. Not so much that it can be a lot of fun (it is) but there's not much else to do in town...

Not at all, it is quite civilized. Helsinki city does quite a good service of dispatching most of the "drunks" to the mökki and the rest can't afford the entrance fee. :D

It's next friday and if your kids are old enough you should go earlier to have them participate in the activities and watch their own bonfire being lit.
  • The Program at the roadside (18-21): Old-fashioned craftsmen, log floaters, and the like, perform. You can also see Finnish folk dancers and musicians, and how to decorate your house in traditional, Finnish Midsummer style.

The Program at the Festival grounds (18-21): The procession of flag, Finnish folk dances and folk music (Jari Komulainen and the band) and play. In the evening everyone can join the dancing and have fun trying out folk dances.

The evening will be continuing with Midsummer Dances (from 22.15.-01)

The Bonfire shore from 9 p.m. till 10 p.m.: Tens of bonfires are lit from 21 p.m. onwards. There is a special bonfire for the children, which is lit on 7.30 p.m. The main bonfire will be lit on 22 p.m.

For people travelling from/through the center bus 24 does the rounds until late. Check reittiopas.

I've been there a couple times to see the bonfire and is well worthwhile going to check it out.
Although i was on my in-laws boat and we didn't have to deal with drunken idiots misbehaving and pissing all the over place...
Not sure if i could handle the crowds onshore myself, i'd rather be out on the water anytime!

There's usually one in Suomenlinna, too - and it's for FREE. And probably not as crowded as Seurasaari might be...

I was there a few years ago. I'm not sure if it's always in the same place, but then it was found like this: when you step off the ferry (near where there's a small bell tower with a clock), you immediately head right and cross the bridge. Then, after the bridge, turn left and keep on walking until you cross another bridge... after which you turn right and follow the road until after perhaps 200 metres you come to a small beach - where this bonfire was back then.

(I haven't been to Seurasaari midsummer, but there weren't any drunken idiots at the Suomenlinna bonfire either -myself perhaps excepted- it was a bit difficult to find, perhaps that kept the "four wheel drives" at bay :) )

In this map... it's in Länsi-Mustasaari, upper left corner, near the black thingy. But once again, I'm not 100% sure if it's that particular place each year. The Suomenlinna info might know... http://www.suomenlinna.fi

The scenery is nice, especially if we're blessed with proper weather...

And there are some cool cannons nearby :)

Plus of course that weather permitting there's no place for a picnic in Helsinki like Suomenlinna!

(You need to pay the ticket for the ferry of course, but it's in HKL zone so if you have a monthly ticket you can just use that... and it's only a few Euros anyway)

There's another bonfire in Mustikkamaa, the island on the way to the zoo (you can drive to the island). Never been there, but it should also be free and somewhere near the beach.

Are you on a campaign against the Seurasaari foundation? :D
Yeah, is a bit expensive but if you like dancing and to be entertained it's a good option.
