Hi,
Before we moved house I had a little post it note with all the codes to make Finnish characters on a non - Finnish keyboard. Does anyone have these? (eg. Ctrl/Alt + ???? = Finnish letter)

It's Alt + the left Shift key.
And you need to activate the keyboard in your windows control panel, too.

I wrote alt+num and then google suggested alt+number codes which brought me to http://www.starr.net/is/type/altnum.htm which is probably what you want. I <3 googleCloudberry wrote:Hi,

As Upphew mentioned, there's also the international keyboard, too, and it works really well. However, although I can access it in the US, some of my European friends have mentioned that it's not always compatible with European keyboards, for some reason. If you could somehow access it, however, it's much more convenient than the Alt+XXX method.
Then again, another friend of mine in California has been studying the Irish language for several years, a language which also includes some non-English characters, and she now knows the Alt+XXX codes so well that she couldn't be bothered to use the newer international keyboard. That's what works for her.

If you’re using Windows you could download Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (a free tool available on their site) to create a customized copy of your current keyboard layout.Cloudberry wrote:Hi,

For example, you could add the letter ä on the [Right Alt] + [A] key combination, and the letter ö on the [Right Alt] + [O] key combination. It is also possible to add shifted variants ([Right Alt] + [Shift] + [A] and [Right Alt] + [Shift] + [O]) for the upper case letters Ä and Ö, or create ”dead keys” which do not do anything when pressed alone but will add diacritics on top of the next typed letter.
It is even possible to add special characters directly on the keyboard — such as a long dash (em dash or en dash), or a bullet point, or a check box, or “typographic” quotes or a degree sign — so you can type them easily without having to resort to the Character Map tool or numeric codes.
The right-hand [Alt] key is also known as [Alt Gr] (for “alternate graphics”) on some “international” keyboards (genuine Finnish keyboards included), and that’s what the MSKLC calls it, too.

Hold down ALT whilst typing in these numbers, the codes are:
Ä - ALT + 0196
ä - ALT + 0228
Ö - ALT 0214
ö - ALT 0246
Ä - ALT + 0196
ä - ALT + 0228
Ö - ALT 0214
ö - ALT 0246

To use those codes all the time seem awfully difficult to me. It might be easier to invest on a proper keybord. For example, Cruz Broker sold second hand kbords for 5 euro.

Re: Finnish characters on non Finnish keyboard
Another method for ÄäÅåÖö characters is http://www.lexicool.com/lexibar_finnish ... acters.asp this gives you a small toolbar on your screen that you just drag the characters from. Also available for other languages too.
It is what it is, make of it what you will.
Re: Finnish characters on non Finnish keyboard
And the poor man's version of that is to keep a text on your computer containing all the Äs and the Ös, from where you can do copy & pasteKai wrote:Another method for ÄäÅåÖö characters is http://www.lexicool.com/lexibar_finnish ... acters.asp this gives you a small toolbar on your screen that you just drag the characters from. Or just keep open an instance of Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map for the same purpose.maxxfi wrote: And the poor man's version of that is to keep a text on your computer containing all the Äs and the Ös, from where you can do copy & paste
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.
