So the vegan friend is recovering from his weekend in Tampere? Not being sarcastic, but I have to say I do find amusing how vegans/veggies who usually are into the health benefits of that lifestlye are just as good at sucking down the diesel like the rest of us !!! Love my veggies and fruit, but after a night suckin' diesel, you can't beat a good sauna and a great feed of sausages with that lovely sweetish cucumber pickle/relish thing (is it kurkkusalatti?) yum yum. Or, if I can walk straight, to Seahorse for the sardines and mashed spuds with the big lump of butter on top -

I think there is no need to worry about getting fresh stuff in Tampere, or any city in Finland.
You can even get your school meals as only vegatarian (we get free meals at school)already as a kid.
You can also grow your own stuff in the balcony or rent a piece of land close to the cities. Visit the markets places, visit the farms to buy products directly and market Hall in Tampere.


You have always cheeper and more expensive options. If you visit Stockmann, S-chain or K-chain grocery in Finland, they are typically willing to order you what ever you need/want:).

The local bitter where my folks used to live (and it's no longer brewed there) was Hartley's XB, the recipe is supposed to have included several lbs of fillet steak added to the vats in order to get the taste right ... in the olden days that taste came from the odd rat or two which would drown in the vats brewing.

larger supermarkets stock three varieties - plain, marinated and smoked. We usually buy the latter. A block of the above is 270g and depending on the shop will cost you around €3.80 - €4.20

Broccoli depends on the time of the year, usually it's Spanish and costs about €1.20 - €1.50 for 250-300g. I haven't seen the long stalked purple varieties that you can get in England. White cabbage (the pale green one) is available everywhere, red cabbage and Chinese leaves can be found in most shops. There are usually 3 or 4 varieties of salads. Savoy cabbage is almost unknown and outside of ethnic shops the choice of leafy greens is pretty poor - Swiss chard (mangoldi) and kale can rarely be found on sale though some people grow their own, though I remember someone (Enk I think) writing that they'd got hold of it for free somewhere.

Yeah - I think fish oils are used in certain beers too, again, for flavouring. Certain chemicals and flavourings and processing methods are out too. Can't remember details...I gave up the cruelty free thing a long time ago. You can get lists from the vegan societies etc etc.

We got two so-called hippie stores here in town, here the links to their sites:

The latter one also has an online store, so have a look at the prices yourself.

Sokos is in the centre, close to Keskustori, and has a supermarket in its basement. It has a huge veggie and fruit part, and you can find everything all year around, though towards winter the prices are increasing - tomatoes go up to 7,00€/ kg, salads between 1,50€ and 4,00€, etc. Stockmann has also a superb supermarket, its close to the railway station and usually is still a bit more expensive than the others. S-Market, also close to the railway station, is a bit cheaper than the previous two though still has a big veggie and fruit area.

That €7/kg is for forced domestic tomatoes in the winter. In Winter time you will find Spanish and Dutch tomatoes for closer to €3.5/kg.

I´ve no idea where Skullmonkey´s from - yes by local standards Stockmann Herkku are the best food shops in Finland, but they are hardly superb. For comparison the Sobey´s at the harbourfront has a better selection of veg & fresh food even than Stockmann in Helsinki (the best food shop in Finland), never mind Tampere.

To the OP, once you are here, search for yourselves, compare the prices among different shopping outlets, then go for the ideal option. I doubt if Tampere lets you die of lack of vegs.
