Hello everybody !!!

Hope all of you are having good time.

Need your suggestion on the following issue:

I am CCNA certified and Cisco Certified Academy Instructor (CCAI) as well. I have been working in the networking field for the last 4 and a half years. I have been accepted in the Helsinki University of Technology in the Master's of Science in Communication Engg. Programme. Wish to start my course from the end of August, 09. No tution fees required. But food and accommodation I need to manage myself. So I must try some part time job. So is there any suggestion regarding network related jobs or any other part time job as a student I can do? I know the situation of job market is not good now. But I must do try. As I will be new there and dont know the Finnish language, so I am little worried. Any kind of suggestion or help in this regard will be very much appreciable. Will be waiting. Thanks.

I would call that optimistic.
80% of the students who had part time jobs last year, are having serious trouble finding one this year. (and they are Finns, knowing their way around)
Only chance is if you use relations to get you an introduction.

Even using relations is getting difficult...as there is practically a hiring freeze in almost all companies..
and Even if a position comes up as open, The companies still need to consider the people that they fired/let go of, before they can consider new applicants..

Theres the companies offering training, so your CCAI might prove useful.

According to my knowledge Networking work need Finnish skills more than programmer as they need to understand some live issues at times from customers or any other network problem. But it is possible that you may get job, but you should have option2 in hand if no jobs for you. It is not certain that you will get job here....I would say it will take min of 4 months to get or may be more months.

I am really feeling good to get the responses from you. You people are really very lovely. I am not worrying that much now as good people like you, are there in Finland. So hopefully I will find out some way there.

By the way, want to inform you that I have been accepted in the Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden as well and in the waiting list of the Wirless Systems of KTH, Sweden. Little bit confused. Finland or Sweden? According the students' opinion whom I can contact with from Sweden and Finland, so far I have decided - Finland. Do you have any suggestion regarding that? Students have informed me that Helsinki Uni of Tech - Comm Engg- Radion Comm dept. arranges the summer work and there is a possibility of getting paid project in the 2nd year. It will be great to have some information from you regarding this issue.

Chalmers is a "good name".

Chalmers is Pretty good..But a small town will probably lead you to jump off the Gotland cliffs..
KTH is pretty good too and now have more improved relations with the Industry.... But all is dependent on networking there..
HUT is much better but the pay might not be very much and you still need to show the bank account every year!!
The Swedish market is bigger for CCNA/CCAI certification than here..But that could change soon!! as the layoffs are getting worse in Sweden..

The language issue is much easier in Sweden than here..
and there is a bigger Indian community there than in Finland..
Potentially, you are looking at some years of study without pay...anywhere..
IF HUT offers some PAY after 2 years, market would have improved for IT and your chances might be better in Finland..

I can't compare the future after you graduate in the IT field but I can tell you that in Finland it is much easier to integrate and homely to live.
Finland is more foreigner friendly and the home of the fatherless.
When you come here you will be surprise to discover that there is not much difference between the original finn and you, you will enjoy your stay like a finn.
The pay you will get in part-time non-IT jobs for non english speaker is almost the same for a parttime IT job. there is also more freedom and choices for you in the employment market.
It is also easier to get residence permits.
While in Helsinki there are several job opportunities for you for part-time, get ready to search and you will get one.

Go to Sweden, it is better in every aspect. I hope you don't make the same mistake I made, I got admitted to Goteborg University for Software Engineering and management, I can't believe I'm here in Finland.

Even though I myself would unquestionably rather live in Finland, I agree you'd have much less adjustment and distraction going to Sweden.

The cities are more cosmopolitan, the language is much easier (you'd be likely to absorb it if you have an aptitude), the level of English around you will be somewhat better, the atmosphere / food / opportunities will be more multinational, the bureaucracy has much longer experience accommodating foreigners, and the culture will feel less foreign. In general, you get a better education in Finland (Finns often go to a Swedish university when they can't get into a Finnish one), but the level of technological education in Sweden happens to be excellent. I don't know how to rank your various opportunities from an educational perspective because they're all excellent.

Everything is more political in Sweden. Even most of the art is political art. That and the tabloid culture are annoying to me. Sweden is sort of like the popular, opinionated, gabby blond sister and Finland is the reticent, dark-haired quieter sister with still waters running deep. But those things aren't really relevant to your choice, particular in comparison to the other factors I mentioned. I think you'd have a wonderful, life-changing experience going to school in Sweden. You'd always have Finland as an exotic place to visit for a few days whenever you get tired of the generic aspects of Sweden.

I agree that Profboy has to be pulling your leg. For a compatible person, the rewards of assimilating to Finland are great. But the curve is steep and the attributes are pretty much the opposite of every point in Profboy's characterization.
