About Speed Cameras ?

Post by sandundasa » Wed Jun 24, 2009 2:03 pm

Can somebody please explain what's the limit that you can get fine for speeding ?

For example if the road is 100kmph, if I drive 105kmph, will I get a fine ?

And also if I overtake another vehicle, it's natural that I will pass the limit,

will I get a fine for that ?

Is there any maximum speed allowed while overtaking ?

The posted limit.

No.

Depends how much you speed. If you go 5 over, then not, if 20 then probably yes.

I just noticed the topic "cameras"... but those answers still stand, although they implemented zero tolerance in some road (in helsinki, espoo or vantaa)?

Last time my husband was caught speeding he was overtaking. It was on Route 51 (in Inkoo) during their zero-tolerance binge a couple of years ago. He argued that the other driver was dangerous as he was driving UNDER the speed limit. The police didn't buy his argument but they did say that they do sometimes caution people who drive too slowly.

The theory is simple. If you are in a 100 kmh zone, then you shouldn't drive over 100 kmh. They can fine you if they want to, even if you are overtaking. There is nothing "to explain". Sometimes the police are stricter than others. That's up to them. Usually they publicize a zero-tolerance campaign in the local newspapers, so no one can say they weren't warned

They will start with a zero tolarance police (starting around Helsinki/Turku)
So yes.

as above, yes
Is there any maximum speed allowed while overtaking ?

I've been pulled over for overtaking above the speed limit. That was in the UK though. I said I was overtaking and the copper told me it didn't matter the limit is the limit, 120 is 120 no matter what. I am sure it's the same everywhere and I used that rule here until I knew 100% otherwise...better to be safe than 2 in the bush. But yeps, it's the same here.

I guess if you over take at 103 on a 100, they wont care...but do 120 on a 100 and they will.

Re: overtaking, I had an argument with the Other Half about the white lines in the middle of the road. My understanding (from 1970s UK Highway Code) is that you cannot cross a solid white line in the middle of the road. And that applies to pulling out as well as pulling in. He argues that if you pull out BEFORE the solid white line starts then it is OK to pull in over a solid white line. And he was sooooo sure of himself  I know I am right (as usual) So who can find me the text in Finnish so I can say "told you so" (before he gets charged with dangerous driving)?

I'm totally confused. you mean when overtaking?

but if you don't pull back in then you are on the other side until a broken line appears?!? That can't be right! Is it? :? x 1,000

So your position is that you must continue driving down the wrong side of the road until you reach another passing zone?

I would at least agree that you are supposed to complete the maneuver and return to your driving lane before reaching the solid line. Of course that's based on U.S. experience and instruction, but that can be useful to know if you ever visit. The rules may be different in Finland, since many drivers speed up as soon as you pull out to pass them.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

What happens if you can't complete the maneuver (in the USA)? You gotta pull in anyway I am sure. Solid line or not.

I think it's some sort of envy. And it's not just junttis who do it, some of my supposedly intelligent and well-educated work colleagues do it too.

So finnish driving discussion again...

My present pet hate (and it's damn stupid) is people deciding to beat you on the overtaking...you do all the stuff, indicate etc etc and as you start to pull out some knob beats you to it at 150 km...And there's never a copper around. But god they're there when you ride your bike with out a light in Turku.

Envy, yeah..."Damn, that guy is gonna get home 30 seconds before me"

Highly f@cking stupid.

Right. In principle you could get ticketed for reckless driving or maybe something more arcane and specific to the offense.

In particular, if you can't complete the maneuver before the solid line, you're required to abort the maneuver and drop back in line behind the vehicle you were trying to pass. Of course it's hard to get caught violating these rules, except perhaps by an unmarked police vehicle or by an oncoming one.

Christ! can you imagine that being possible here?...with everyone driving up each others arses. there's no way you would get back into position..."You went, I am not letting you back in, that's your fault, and good luck with the on-coming truck".

They should give them fines, on the two lanes (up and going) they drive 75 or 80 exact but when you are able to pass them to go easily to 90 or 100. Typical Finnish and hypocrit. And yes Penelope is right, otherwise everybody would say that they started overtaking somewhere 10 km ago where there was no straight line  Difficult to prove if police gets you on the other side.
