I don't know.

They found better beer in England?

I have trouble imagining the people saying "hakisitko" to each other. Which do you think couples use more often?
Couples say "hakisitko". Parents say to children "haepas". It is "hae" that would be rude. "pas" at the end softens it.

I think the Swedes and Russians just couldn't handle 4 infinitives and 17-21 cases (nobody ever seems to REALLY know how many there are). Or maybe they could, but decided it was more trouble than it was worth.

You have to remember that it wasn't 'England' as we know it today...different clans and all that. The vikings succeded in some areas and not others. sometimes through conflict and sometimes through a kind of ancient form of multiculturalism and intergration.

I think they stuck around cos it was so easy to get visas, dole money and soggy chips.

(there was quite an interesting thing about the UK being influenced by invaders, vikings, romans, etc etc on BBC history, the 'invasion model' is out and integration and assimiliation in)

Some stories suggest that one of your kings were finn descent, you probably have some finn/nordic blood too :) We had kings in russia too.
Same stories strongly suggest that being "from finn bloodline" was good in sweden, denmark and norway kings too.
Well those stories are good to me so dont dare to deny! :)

If I remember my history correctly, the modern Princess of Finland had a shot at becoming Queen of England. Or would it have been Crown Princess? But it's been a while since I saw King Ralph, so I could be misremembering. I do recall that her voice was authentically low.

RUBBISH!

I probably do have 'viking' blood...But Danish is the theory. My real name is Gustav Gustavsson...

Of course, British people are full of gaijin blood, you can't find a 'pure' English person. my surname is one of those XYZ-son names and fathers home town was established by vikings. My father did some research into the family and his side have been in that area for a long time. But you never know, probably all nonsense...I think he came to a dead end...we don't talk much so I never asked. One interesting thing that did come up was that one of my relatives was hung in Nottingham. He was a highway man and according to info quite notorious at the time. But not Dick Turpin...sadly.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Turpin

there is also some connection, by marriage, to a famous British author...something which my aunt found disgusting as she viewed him as 'a sick pervert'. (so do a lot of other people)

IIRC my mother did similiar research and a nordic connection was found there too....she's Irish. The family came from Scotland but had roots in some northern country.

So hopefully I have some criminal-berzerker-pervert blood in me....well, yeah...obviously!

King Ralph was set around 1990 and featured the then-20-something Princess of Finland. That's about as far back as I know my history.

Halfway worth seeing if you've never seen it before. At least the parts with the Princess.

That only works when the roads are empty enough for drivers to keep twice the safe distance.

Otherwise, slipping into the "safe distance" hole in the flow automatically means that the person joining the flow is now at half the safe distance, as is the driver following him. So in order for both drivers to restore their safe distances ... what must they do?

They must restore it over larger distance. You do NOT need to create safe distance the very moment another car is added to chain, you can do it over next few minutes or so with far less speed difference, giving following cars ability to adjust to change without causing escalating reduction in speed leading to traffic jam.

Perhaps if UK etc people understood this simple concept, your traffic would not be jammed so often.

And then to Karhunkoski:
Nope. Good manners and courtesy are not solely defined by the host society (although some are). General manners are an international phenomenon, and all countries in Europe can be judged on their awareness of these with equal congratulation or disdain. :P
Show me what manners are universal and then you might have a point.

Everything is cultural related. Only thing which makes you imagine that your own manners are somehow "universal" is that you are bit too thick to grasp that there are two simple explanations for it.

1) You only travel in relative vicinity of your country of origin, permitting cultural differences to be smaller than if you go further away.

2) You are too thick to grasp that smile and politeness of native dealing with you is actually hiding thoughts "What a @#$% imbecile this guy is... Not knowing a thing about basic decency and manners. Oh well, have to pretend he did not violate good manners".

This latter one often takes place in Asian cultures where confrontation is avoided. Your actions might be brutal insult, but it is actively sought to ignore in interest of maintaining cordial relations.

Actually, one reasonably universal manner is precisely that... Active ignorance of lack of proper manners represented by foreigners.

Here, catch this.

Vicinity in geography does not always equal vicinity culturally.
Finnish culture is distinctly different from Indo-European language families cultures.

I think it has something to do with language being tool of culture and vice versa.

And international means international, in case you did not figure it out Europe does not represent majority of international.

So all nations in Europe cannot be judged by your own personal preference.
Nor are there international standards for "good manners".

How about just shutting up and accepting that here things which you consider as epitome of good manners are considered irrelevant to good manners and good manners are defined by Finnish cultural tradition.
