Bringing newborn babies to Finland from Sweden?

Post by cdncarryingaSwe » Wed Jun 24, 2009 4:17 pm

Hi, Perhaps this has been discussed elsewhere but I am having difficulty finding the answer related to my unique situation.

I am Canadian-married to a Finnish speaking-Swede. We are expecting twins (our first children) in the fall and I have been offered a good job-short term(8 months)-with the high possibility of contract renewal in the Helsinki region. (She has family there) I would be paying taxes in Finland.

I am not eligible for a Kela card as I would be on a temporary resident visa in Finland. We have been informed by Kela that to be eligible to receive health care benefits my wife must transfer her resident papers to Finland-3 months before the babies are due to arrive. My job does not start until at most 2 weeks before the babies arrival date so that is not an option, along with the fact I have work and I will be in Canada until Aug 1, before returning to Sweden. My wife will birth the babies in Sweden as she has a relationship built with her doctors here, etc. I have an agreement with my possible employer for some weeks away to be in Sweden when the twins do arrive.

Private health care costs are in the 100€ per visit range in Finland and commuting between the 2 countries to receive the free health care in Sweden is not an option for many reasons.

I understand their are many check-ups and shots the twins will need, along with any possible extra medical care needed.

Please if anyone has prior experience in related matters. I am open to any and all suggestions about how to resolve this issue as there must be a logical answer that doesn't cost the extra money that comes with this job offer? Like I said we have contacted Kela and they only have one answer: move papers to Finland-3 months before. We won't have a residence there until the fall? To me it seems silly that there is no other options in this matter? I must provide an answer to my employer before the end of July at latest.

Thanks for any assistance!

Isnt that better that you aks the Swedish Health system to inform KELA to support your wife and kids when they are here..
There is a Nordic agreement that healthcare is free maternal care is also free when your SO comes to Finland..
Better, call another KELA agent and check with them!! Also, make sure that they give it in email/writing so you can use it for future reference..
