It can't be scrapped unless you pay taxes on it.

You would have to prove that you brought it in with you with you moved here. But if you had done that it would be on Finnish plates. In other words, you can't scrap a car here with foreign plates.abigailkhan wrote:I understood that an EU court had ruled that Finland is no longer allowed to tax people that have moved to Finland on the car that they bring with them. What I was trying to express by saying the car is a UK one is that the scrappage would be for parts/metals only and not part of some Finnish car scrappage scheme.
Does anyone know of any such scrap metal dealerships in the Helsinki area?
Years ago a friend of mine was driving around on GB plates here and managed to write her car off in an accident. The insurer could not scrap the car in Finland. The wreck was exported back to the UK to be scrapped. My friend had been living/working here for several years and brought the car here when they moved. I'm not sure what the final outcome was, but my understanding is that (tax or no tax) a resident of Finland is not allowed to drive around in a car with foreign plates (unless the car has been officially declared as a temporary import and the driver has a temporary work contract with an end date less than 18 mths bla bla bla).
Re: Scrapping a UK car in Finland
Easy solution. (choice of two)
Go and buy a large can of petrol.
Drive the car to a secluded space (use your imagination on this one)
Remove plates, destroy engine numbers and any identity etc.
Dose with petrol (see above)
Light a match, and throw to car.
Job Done
Or..................................
Find a secluded (deep) lake with easy access.
Remove plates, destroy engine numbers and any identity etc.
Drive car up to waters edge - push until submerged.

Re: Scrapping a UK car in Finland
I have NO idea how is the legislation about it so possibly mine is a fool suggestion but...
would any company doing stunt cars /monster cars shows be interested in a soon-to-be-scrapped car?

If the car is over 10 years old and you buy a new car here (in the UK), the Gov't pays you 2 grand towards your new car with the participating stealerships. I think the scheme end in couple of months or if the allocated budget is used.
Just a thought.
Just a thought.
Get in there...
Re: Scrapping a UK car in Finland

Re: Scrapping a UK car in Finland
I hope the irresponsible prat who suggests driving it into a lake takes a moment to consider the environmental impact that oil and other fluids contained within your car can have on the water. Prick.
Political correctness is the belief that it's possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
Re: Scrapping a UK car in Finland
Yes, I agree with Karhuso, if the person suggesting dumping the car in the lake or burning it in a forest was serious, and if they are a foreigner, then shame on them, they should be booted out pronto. That sort of thing is pure evil. If it was a joke, then fair enough.
Re: Scrapping a UK car in Finland
Good job Abi. I think that one of you has to send papers to UK so that they know that car is out of traffic and will put it in the system as such.
Edit: ok I read over your last sentence. If you would have moved to Germany, you would have got a better deal (if you would have bought a new one) unfortunately here all the fun things are evil (cars, motors, alcohol (because a lot of idiots do not know how to use it) etc. etc.
