Anyone know of one in Espoo?
We have a large willow tree behind our house and I think it is about time we had it pollarded (?) - I am sick of sweeping up all the broken twigs and branches every time there is a storm and raking up all the leaves in the autumn. Besides, it is now just way too big for the yard. But I don't want to have it completely felled. I think we need to have this done professionally since we don't have any ladders that high and I'm officially grounded since I cracked two ribs painting the roof last Summer.
Anyone have a recommendation?
Do the municipalities offer this kind of service?
Do we need a permit of any kind? (It's not on the road but it is right next to Fortum's brand new district heating pipeline)

If you are in city area then you need a permit and city has people who atleast know who to contact. http://www.espoo.fi/default.asp?path=1; ... ;8220;8388

Kiitos.
Will give them a call then. We won't cut the tree down.... just amputate about 10m of trunk and the biggest branches. Difficult to estimate but I guess the tree is 15-20m tall.
Unfortunately my understanding (from when we bought the house) is that the municipality wishes to expropriate about 2-3 m from the bottom of our yard... and the tree is precisely on that strip of land. So, my SO may not wish to involve the city people. OTOH not sure we have a choice due to the proximity of the pipeline and some overhead cables/wires.

Re: Lumberjack or Tree Surgeon
It's quite possible that the municipality simply wants a "Right-of-way" over the bottom of your yard so they can perform maintenance on the wires and pipeline you mentioned. You would still own the land but that small area would be subject to a "Right-of-way easment" granted only to the municipality and/or the people it contracts with to do maintenance. Maintenance would include trimming the tree (not necessarily the way you want it done) but probably not removing it.penelope wrote:Kiitos.Unfortunately my understanding (from when we bought the house) is that the municipality wishes to expropriate about 2-3 m from the bottom of our yard... and the tree is precisely on that strip of land. That sounds fair enough.
If they pay to prune the tree, then I don't mind too much what it looks like.

Re: Lumberjack or Tree Surgeon
you should probably contact the municipality to ask them to "maintain" the tree highlight the risk it poses for the utility poles and the junction box!!

Re: Lumberjack or Tree Surgeon
No, I don't want them to cut it down (which is probably what they would do). I guess the tree is about 20 years old and it has never been pollarded. When I was in Fiskars last week I noticed that all the big Salix along the river had been pollarded and they looked fine (in an odd cropped off sort of way). Then it occured to me that we could do the same with the one in our yard. I have a feeling willow just keep growing forever if you don't do something.
We need expert advice though because I'm afraid the roots will spread and damage the foundations of the house if we prune the trunk and the branches.
