The Apple huolto place in Ruoholahti/Kamppi wants 140€ to repair my sons iPod (which is about 18mths old, so no guarantee left). His iPod went in for a repair as soon as he got it (it didn't work when he took it out of the box) and went in again during the guarantee period for a repair. So, probably a Monday morning model....
So, my question is.... are there any service centres who repair iPods for free (well..... almost...)?
Do iPods generally go blank after 18 mths?

I would assume not.
You may be able to locate rates lower than the quoted 140€ that the Apple store wants, but I couldn't foresee it going below 60€ for the estimated repairs.
Might I ask a few questions regarding the iPod?
What model is it?
How is it not working?
What, if anything, made it stop working?
What did the Apple store say was the problem?
As to not only ask questions without providing you with any real answers, I've come up with a few places you may want to concider checking if you haven't already done so.

I can't remember what model it is (Classic???) I think it is 8 Gb. Not the touch screen and not the shuffle. The one in between.
When it boots there is a slightly strange whirring noise and then the "No Entry" screen. Nothing else. It stopped for no apparent reason (at least that is what he tells me

).
Machuolto did not say what was wrong.
I will follow up some of those links. A 60€ repair would be OK. But for 140€ he might as well get a new one.
thanks!

sounds like the hard disk is dead.
To be honest, with the deals around at the moment, it may be cheaper to pick up a new one.
ipodlounge.com can be helpful and there is a lot of "self help" info there..

Have you tried resetting the iPod?
