English courses taught in English, Helsinki

Post by ektaide » Tue Jul 14, 2009 7:52 pm

Hello,

Does anyone know of English courses for foreigners during the day time? It should be taught in English, not Finnish.
I have checked työväenopisto, Arbis, Helsingin aikuisopisto, FinnBrit, but can't find any that is taught in English during the daytime. My friend has just arrived in Finland, she has a child who goes to school, so she is looking for a course to attend while the child is in school.

I've heard that there are commercial language institutions. Does anyone know of any?

Thank you for your help in advance.

She could contact FinnBrit and find out which courses they are running in the Autumn.

Even if there are no day-time courses advertised on the website, it is sometimes possible to arrange a course for a small group "on demand". The administrators are on holiday at the moment but your friend should call (or walk in on Fredrikinkatu 20). There will be someone there at the beginning of August. Or, she can send an email enquiry (addresses on the website).

Finn Brit operates as an association and if you become a member, you get reduced rates for language courses and can also attend other events that are organised from time to time. It is also possible to take the Cambridge and British Council exams through FinnBrit. All their teachers are native English speakers (and teach in English).

There are also many private language schools operating in Helsinki and Espoo. The biggest are probably:

AAC Global
Richard Lewis
Studia Training
Adulta
EF

etc etc etc

...they mostly teach in private companies and public organisations but I'm sure they would offer a course to a private individual or group if approached.

You will pay a lot for those type of schools though. But I believe you can get the money back from taxation - I am not sure but I have been told by someone who went to one of those schools to do the same thing.
