You do have to pay if you want to go Pihlasaari off the southern cost of HKi. Been there once, years ago, pretty good; I think Mark posted before about that too - he was trying to suggest you browse his old posts on the subject but the link does not work out that way (only for him

But yeah, search the forum, there's a few threads.

The beach at Aurinkolahti/Vuosaari is great, its a very long wide beach with a couple of nice cafes directly on the beach, with a nice harbour to one side and an 'open air gym' you can use for free .
The beach at Herttoniemi is also really nice and a good one for if you have kids, there is a boat for the kids to play in and a play park just behind the beach.
There is a nice little beach in Marjaniemi too, small but sheltered with a little Kiosk selling ice cream and stuff and has a 'swimming in a hole in the ice club' (whatever that's called in Finnish?) in the winter with changing block and benches to sit and picnic.
Helsinki really does have lovely beaches, get out there while the sun is still shining!

What about Hietaniemi? A lot of people there, but still good
.
Ps. Does anyone know what time the changing room at Hietaniemi closes? I noticed it was locked at some point, forgot if it was 6pm or so.
