Finnish Book Website Like Amazon
I hve found book shops very expensive in Finland. Does anyone know of a good reliable internet shop that sells Finnish books (like Amazon).
I hope it would have ordering instructions in English.
Thank you!

http://www.akateeminenkirjakauppa.fi/ are not cheap, but you can choose English and they can order pretty much anything for you if they do not have it.

There is no "cheap" in Finland except this:

http://www.booky.fi/ is a great place with free shipping no matter what you buy, and cheap (for Finland) but still no English on the site, not even in the help section, although I have written several times to complain about that. Please go and complain away. It's a good resource with plenty of books in English.

Erm - it's a Nordic web store chain so it's not that surprising (see http://www.adlibris.com/se/ or the Norwegian site...http://www.capris.no/... or the Danish one http://www.adlibris.com/dk/... no English on any of them - as is the case with Amazon.de and Amazon.fr as well...)Cynde wrote:http://www.adlibris.com/fi/ OK too but no English.
OT a bit but you know... it's probably a bit of a slippery slope to these Finnish/Nordic site maintainers; perhaps it would be nice to have some general info in English, but then again, to make it truly accessible and linguistically non-challenging for English-speakers, you'd probably need to have the registration form in English, too... and the next thing you know the customers would be complaining about the descriptions of the books only being in Finnish/Swedish... and the target group being mainly (although not exclusively) interested in Finnish/Swedish/Norwegian language books, this would make little sense... (and would also provide yet another reason for people not to learn a few words of Finnish

AFAIK the alrady mentioned Akateeminen bookshop is the only one that has at least some info & the order interface in English (being such a relatively large company they probably can afford it, I wouldn't say they're the cheapest though)
To the OP: there are some others as well, for example http://www.suurikuu.fi... the magic Google word is of course "kirjakauppa".
I have no first-hand experience of these on-line bookshops myself so I don't know which ones to recommend!
Re: Finnish Book Website Like Amazon
suomalainen.com effed up my lil sisters christmas present, by not delivering it on time. Otherwise it was fine, all the other books came when they promised. Adlibris.com was a ok. Mighty fast by finnish standards. When they had almost all books, it was 2-3 days for the delivery and the missing book left day later (and arrived too! +no extra charges). Minus points for Schenker's packet tracking: it was in swedish. And useless. As status was not updated before I had the packet in my dirty little hands.sammy wrote:I have no first-hand experience of these on-line bookshops myself so I don't know which ones to recommend!

Sammy, you must be Norwegian. I still recommend www.Booky.fi after having actually tried several of them.

Re: Finnish Book Website Like Amazon
Adlibris earned a lot of good karma in my eyes last Christmas. Searched for a certain English title, found it on both Adlibris and Amazon (.de). Adlibris had actually better price (with postage), but with their estimated delivery time it looked uncertain if I got in time from them, so I ordered from Amazon instead. It took Amazon three days to announce that "sorry, we're out of stock after all". At that point I ordered from Adlibris (thinking better late than never) - and it still arrived in time.

Why is that? Because Norwegians are boring?Cynde wrote:Sammy, you must be Norwegian.

Btw thanks for the links/hints, all of you, I might find them useful myself - although to be honest I rather like going to bookshops, even if it's just to browse. And antiquarian book shops

Naaaaaaaaaah Norwegians aren't boring. Some of my favorite people are Norwegians, flott!
I just got a lovely long letter from those wonderful people at http://www.booky.fi who said they will look into getting some English help on the pages! What service! Did you also know they give package discounts on larger orders? And the postage is always free even on small orders? Get your friends to come over

and help with the Finnish and order books together and get a discount.
Could be fun out there on the oil rigs. They even have used books.

Thank your lucky stars that you can get Finnish publications at such a low price!gmitch2000 wrote:I hve found book shops very expensive in Finland...
By the time a Finnish publication gets to the US its price can double, or can more than double, due to shipping and handling costs.

Anywaqy, I'll check out what the Booky folks have on offer. Then again I live so close to Akateeminen etc that I'll probably fall prey to them, and all the other "IRL" bookshops... and to be honest my bookshelves are absolutely bursting. Let's see.
But I do love the Norwegian geitost, goat cheese.
