Security professional seeking move

Post by helsinkimorris » Thu Jul 23, 2009 5:26 pm

Hi everyone

I am currently working in Afghanistan as part of a close protection team for the European police. This is my second time here and i have also worked for the British embassy in Helmand aswell as the american military and core of engineers in Iraq. I have also served with the British military for a number of years and i have tried to settle in Helsinki but found myself having to head back to the middle east to find work. I have pretty much had enough of being in this environment and i am keen to find something in Finland as i really want to be home with my partner but im affraid the work situation and my poor language skills are going to cause the same problems as last time. Unfortunately my line of work is not much use in Helsinki but id still like to do something with my trade. Can anyone make any suggestions as i seem to be finding it almost impossible to find suitable work.

Thanks for your time

Craig

Thanks for the reply, Ive checked into those things you mentioned and i need to do some kind of written exam. I know those are the obvious answers but the only things ive come up with is at the emabassies or in with nokia as a security driver and they just arent playing ball as im not a fluent finnish speaker. But thanks for the reply its very much appreciated.

You have identified the problem yourself - your skills are not in great demand here, and in those areas where you might normally expect to find work, you would need the local language. As I see it you have three options:

1) learn the language, and for example a nightclub doorman dealing with the public would normally be expected to be fluent... 5 years if you are a genius, 20 years if you're normal. This is not really practical unless you are located in Finland, and to be located here you really need to be working.

2) get professional skills which don't require fluent language - the building trade has in downturn at the moment, but in better times there are usually construction jobs going - on big jobs like Olkiluoto 3 the vast majority of contractors are foreigners. Plumbing might be another area to look at.

3) relocate to a place where your skills are in demand - as you have already done. Perhaps the nearest one to Finland would be St Petersburg - Russia is reputed to be a bit of a lawless wasteland

It would allow you to commute at weekends if you could find work there.

Hey

Thanks for the post. You pretty much confirmed what im thinking already. I guess its time for a career change which isnt what i wanted but thats just the way it goes i guess. I have been considering the plumbing industry but im pretty sure im going to have to study in the UK first. Thanks for your help though its very much appreciated.

You are in a very rare niche you compete only with someone like http://www.hokutoryu.com/ave.html
