Laser eye surgery
Laser eye surgery
I know this question has been asked before but it was a year ago and I was hoping for some more up to date info and maybe some more experiences. So.....
Have any of you guys had laser eye surgery in Finland?
If yes any suggestions of where to or where not to go?
Cheers,

Oh, God, God, God! What on earth was I drinking last night? My head feels like there's a Frenchman living in it.
Laser Eye Surgery
I too am considering laser eye surgery, and after a lot of research I have narrowed it down to Silmäkeskus (had an appointment last month and was very pleased) and Sairaala Laseri (will schedule an appointment for the first of the year). I am pretty sure I will go with Silmäkeskus, but would like to visit Sairaala as well, as I have read a lot of positives about Dr. Risto Uusitalo.

How much is it in Finland.
I'm quite sure i will do it in February or March.
Not in Finland, but anyway it would be interresting to have a comparisson.
In Germany FEMTO-LASIK for both eyes is about 5000 €, including a 2nd surgery if a correction should be necessary.

.... trying to find my way out of here.

I underwent the LASIK operation for both eyes, some 2.5 years ago, in this clinic : silmasairaala
It costed me ~2500€ of my own pocket altogether.

But Germans with any sense go to Hungary to have their eyes and teeth done. I had Lasik on one eye in Budapest in 2001, nearly six years ago. I can't remember the cost but it was less than the price of a new pair of specs and that included all the pre-op examinations and regular checkups afterwards. The surgeons in the ex-East Bloc have been doing laser surgery longer than anyone in the west... they have the most experience. The clinic I went to was open 7 days a week, and operated almost non-stop.gon2o wrote:

Re: Laser eye surgery
I believe femto-lasik is an improved technology for lasik.
A friend who for years has gone to the clinic adjacent to Silmasairaala instead went to Eiran sairaala for the operation because she said they offered the latest Lasik technology. http://www.eiransairaala.fi/index.php?k=8998

Hi,
I know you won't believe me, but if you really want to have the eye-surgery done, one of the best places to have it done is Slovenia. There is an opthamologist-surgeon called dr. Irman whose practice is in Celje (middle of Slovenia - about 3 hours drive from Vienna, 3.5 hours from Munich, and he is reputed to be one of the best in Europe, if not the world. A number of close friends have had it done by him and none have experienced any problems. One of these guys was working in the States and decided to get it done, as it is not covered by insurance there, he would have paid for it himself. When he went for the inital check up the surgeon asked him where he was from and when he said Slovenia, the doctor started to laugh and said "why would you get it done here when you have one of the best guys there?". The cost in Slovenia is 1000e per eye. Hygiene practices etc. are exactly the same as Finland. MRSA rates hosptials are lower.

I'm also thinking about having laser eye surgery on both eyes. I will have it done in my country. Dunya Goz Hastanesi (World Eye Centers) is the best private eye clinic in Turkey and they also offer very reasonable Medical Tourism Packages for patients coming from abroad.

A says: I had it done here.
B says: I had it done there.
OK, fair enough, but was it a success?
It is some years since I looked into laser surgery. I did so after a friend had it done with great results- The "eye doctor" (not sure what you call them) I used said she had had a couple of patients who had bad (irreversible) results, and she recommended that I just use specs. That is what I did. I don't know if her recommendations were related to the state of my eyes or what, and it was a while ago, so maybe I should look into it again. At the time I remember thinking that if the results were poor there wouldn't be a day go by when I wouldn't ask myself why I didn't take the eye doctor's advice.
I had my eyes tested last week and was told that I could legally drive in Finland without specs. That surprised me, but maybe suggests that my eyes aren't so bad as I think they are. Now, if I could find my specs I could hit the "submit" button.
