Do I need a work permit?

I will be coming to Finland from the US at the end of the month to videotape legal depositions. The depositions will then be used in court back here in the states. I don't believe that depositions are a part of the legal process in Finland. I was wondering if I will need a work permit while I'm there. Thanks.

Well if you would be needing one you wouldn't be coming here at the end of the month. I guess you're in the slot of a "newsmedia reporter" or whatever as you're not being paid in Finland by a Finnish entity anyways.

If you'd want to be sure, you should ask from here: http://www.migri.fi/netcomm/default.asp, not from us. My guess is no permit would be required. If what you do does in no way involve Finnish authorities or officials, it's hard to believe anybody from them ever know what you would do on a visa-free business trip anyway.

Hi Scott,

I think you should be exempt from the need for a residence permit provided that your assignment doesn't last longer than three months (i.e. as a normal visitor under the visa exemption arrangement). The relevant statute is section 81 of the Aliens Act, specifically point 1 of paragraph 1, which exempts "specialists" arriving by invitation or under contract.
