Haaga-Helia, International Business Entrance Exam

Hi,

I'm about to start studying for the entrance exam for the International Business course at Haaga-Helia. The articles are quite varied (I've posted a link below) and I was wondering whether anybody applying this time around has any experience with these exams? I'd love to know the type of questions that I can expect to be asked? If anybody else is reading for this in the Espoo/Helsinki area then it would be great to get together at least once and throw some thoughts and ideas around..

I already have a Master's degree in psychology but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be helping me much here in Finland so I'm going for a more career-orientated BBA

Study Percent and Logical thinking problems, Sequence Problems, simple equations (no logarythm, sin/cos/tg/ctg, integral, function needed) from Math section. Reading section will be questions from the Pre-Reading Material you've got (those articles n' stuff). Writing section will be an essay, the topic for the essay will be based on the Pre-Reading Material. The Speaking Part topic will be announced with the Invitation Letter, you will have to discuss two questions/problems in a group of 6 students.

I think Forest_Girl has covered it, the questions on the texts are fairly general, just remember a few facts and you should be fine if you're a Brit (?) It's about clarity of your answer in English which (i think) puts you at an advantage as a native speaker. The maths was harder on the Bus Info Tech exam (which i passed too and i'm crap at maths). The interview was fine everyone tried to get their points in quickly and i was worried after about 8 mins of the 20 that i wasn't going to get a word in edgeways so when i piped up i disagreed with a lot of what people had said, or at least produced a counter argument and they seemed to like that.

I've got a degree in philosophy so i'm in the same boat as you.

Masters degree in psychology + BBA looks like a HR / recruiting career.

I'm applying to Haaga-Helia this fall too. But, what I fear is not being invited to the entrance exam. If the statistics were Jan 2009: 3,665 1st choice/5,353 applicants applying to HH with 36 placements and in January 2008: 1,391/3,552 with 36 placements. I really believe those numbers are going to skyrocket this fall for those 36 placements with the recession getting worse and no jobs around. Though I live overseas, last year I didn't have 7 people a day ask me if my job was hiring. Now, it's becoming more common from day to day. Does anyone know how many people were invited to take the HH exam?

Thank you for your responses so far! Persuivant, you are right, I am hoping to achieve a career in HR so the BBA is a very necessary step for me. Good guess

Vesper, I phoned HH earlier in the week as I wanted to get an idea of whether my A-levels (UK high school qualifications) would be good enough for me to get an invitation to the exam. Apparently, it doesn't matter how well you did, they just want you to submit proof that you've done these qualifications and then you'll get an invitation. So, if you finished school then you should be OK! I don't know what course you are going for but the statistics for International Business (which I can't find again, sorry) in the Spring was 5,636 applications, 35 given places on the course. Bodes well, doesn't it

Forest Girl and Magic, thank you very much for your feedback. If possible, FG, could you elaborate on the type of maths problem I'm likely to be faced with? I did a maths A-level but I'm not familiar with the type of equations you mentioned.. I'm ploughing through the articles now. The two longer reports are actually okay, but the two short articles are very complicated and involve a lot of economic terms that I have to come to terms with. Hopefully it'll go OK though.

It's fine. The Reading part makes around 15-20mins, Math Section around 40-60mins, and then the left time for essay (I calculate time as I did myself on the exam..maybe others do maths in 5mins

) and Speaking Part is separate from written exam

There is only two degree programs offered for Januray 2010: International Business at HH and International Business at Lahti. That's why I think it's going to be grim reality. I wonder if any other UAS will be offering degree programs by Sept. 1st. Probably not. I have a American diploma, so I guess I will be seeing you at the HH exam in October.

Thanks for sharing your advice, makes me feel more comfortable about buying a flight ticket before I get the invitation letter.
