Hello,

I am moving to Finland (Jyväskylä) in less than a week to study and will be staying in Helsinki to see some friends for 1 week before actually going to Jyväskylä.

I was wondering if I am able to open my bank account (Nordea for example) in Helsinki and get my account number and everything so that my parents can transfer the money I have made for studying as soon as possible and then just use the main branch in Jyväskylä for all of my banking once I actually arrive there.

The reason I am asking is so I know how much money I should take with me for that week in Helsinki and the week (it will be coming from the US) that the money will take to transfer.

I suppose so. But what will you do at the bank in Jyväskylä? You are not getting loans? All payments are done in cash, which you get from wall, in plastic or in online bank.

I suppose so. But what will you do at the bank in Jyväskylä? You are not getting loans? All payments are done in cash, which you get from wall, in plastic or in online bank.

Sure, you have a point, but just in case I needed to have any banking business done there. For example, if there was a problem with the account, etc (which I've never had a problem with Nordea before when I lived in Finland) or anything like that.

I'd wait to get to Jyväskyöä, because if thats where you are living at you need to go pick up stuff, or file your signature or whatnot *there* and you need your ID number which you'll get in Jyväskylä as well as your address etc etc etc. So I'd do my stuff where I was going to be at.

Well, I have a Finnish social security number from before that would just be inactive as of right now. I'm a dual American/Irish citizen and I've lived and worked in Finland from January 2006-August 2008. To my understanding, when I get to Jyväskylä, I just have to let Maistraati know my updated address and that will be that (correct me if I'm wrong though).

I also have my address which is listed on my housing offer that I received back in July (and I already paid the deposit on it).

So with that being said, should I still wait to open it there?

What difference does that make where you open an account within Finland? Anyway, when you change the address, make sure to inform the bank of the same so that you get the bank statement in your new address.

Nothing . I was just explaining to Pursuivant for his earlier response to make a little more sense of the situation.

You can open up an account and then switch "your bank office" to where you live at. There are some stuff you need to go do in *your* bank and go see *your* bank lady for. Or say you need in person to go to pick up your card etc...

Oh and the bank will know automatically in a week when you move, theres this thing called computer...

so most official agencies knows your new address...

Yes, banks seem to know address changes but there's exception to everything. Well... if bank statement doesn't come to your new address at the end of the month, only then you should bother to notify them

In my case, bank statement didn't come, I didn't care (was reckless and had no money anyway ) but the day came when I couldn't use internet banking any longer,The reason being that the codes that I had had become obsolete and that they had already issued a new one which had as usual been posted to my old address.
