You register yourself as the child's father, after that the child can be registered with your family name (or his/her family name can be changed to your name, if he/she has already been registered with the mother's name before that). There is no need to do anything before child is born.

If you want to know where exactly this should happen, you should first tell where the mother lives....

If the mother can read Finnish there are instructions here.
http://www.hel.fi/wps/portal/Terveyskes ... vistaminen

If not then the number to call is (Mon-Fri 9:00 - 11:00) (09) 310 44999
(Address: Toinen linja 4 A, 6. krs, 00530 Helsinki)

The standard procedure is to have the both parents visit (after scheduling a visiting time) with their ID papers. If there are no disagreements between the parents I think it just a matter of signing some papers and then waiting a couple of weeks after that.

(By the way, when you wrote you're not married yet, I assumed that she is not married to anybody else either)

It might not be that easy.
If none of you has the Finnish nationality, your child will not get it either.
So the name giving is primarily subject to your own national legislation.
Finnish rules about names are not to bypass your own rules just because you happened to be in Finland when the child was born.
Go to your embassy and ask there.

Thanks Rip so much for your answer, and thanks Rinso,
Yes Rip she isn't married to anyone else, and she is European living in Finnland
It'd have become easier if I'm in Finland now , but I'm not
do you think I can do that in the Finnish embassy where I live ??

SHE should contact the embassy of HER home country to clarify the name issue. After all the kid is going to have have her nationality, so her country's law will be relevant.
All they will do here in Finnish hospital is give her a birth certificate once the baby is there.
Here in Finland, I have done everything I can to blend-in with the Finns, I've changed my hair color, wore differnet clothes, got different

According the Finnish law regarding names(*), it can be applied to person who are either Finnish citizens or domiciled (have a "kotipaikka") here. A newly born baby has the same domicile as his/her mother.

So not having Finnish citzienship should not be problem with Finnish authorities. It is a good idea to check with the mothers national authorities, but if she is EU citizen (or even citizen of some other European country), I'd be very suprised if they would not recognize decisions made by Finnish authorities regarding a person living here.
