English teacher for someone with no knowledge

Post by mikebrads » Mon Sep 07, 2009 12:55 pm

In my current finnish class there is a woman who does not speak or understand English currently (her native language is Russian).

We were "communicating" before the class and she said that she would like to start trying to learn English as well (so that she is not in a permananet loop of learning languages, i think).

As she has been attending the Finnish lessons (at the Helsinki Kesä Yliopisto), and they are practically comptely in Finnish, and is used to the "immersion" idea.
She does not want to learn from a Russian or Finn, but a Native speaker.

Any suggestions, where to start looking, or recommendations?

Does she want to be in a group or would she prefer private lessons? And what is her budget?

Finding an ABSOLUTE beginner class might be quite difficult since nearly all Finns have learnt English in school.

There are group courses here:
http://www.finnbrit.fi/courses.html#coursedescriptions
http://www.helsinginaikuisopisto.fi/cou ... glanti.php

Then the municipalities run courses too. I know Espoon kaupungin työväenopisto has several A1 (beginner) English courses in Leppävaara, Olari, Espoonlahti etc. I guess Helsinki office has them too.

I think most of those courses would assume the learner is already able to read the Latin alphabet.

If she wants private lessons then I guess she could just advertise on here.

Would she consider a language exchange? For example, my native English for her Russian?

Penelope, thanks for the help. I check up on those questions. I had spotted the työväenopisto pages (and they also had the same info in Russian i think)

Vale, i'll also check with her on the language exchange thing.

UPDATE: she is interested in the 1-to-1 but has no idea of current prices
Vale, as she is currently at an effective ZERO knowledge level, she is not so keen on the plan, but if she makes progess may be interested then.
