Where to buy.....?

Post by MissAlice » Tue Sep 08, 2009 12:37 pm

HEy all!

*******This is mostly for fashion student or graduated ones, BUT if your not and you still kno PLEASE do tell :D ******

I just moved here awhile ago, I'm a graduated Fashion student from Paris and I was wondering WHERE ARE ALL THE SUPPLY SHOPS?

Where do you guys go to buy fabrics, finishing and etc? Or where are the best shops (cheapest would be nice).
Usually the school gives you list of where to go and where to buy the cheapest or by in BIG amounts.

Also in Paris you can dumpster dive for fabrics in Sentier (Sentier is where some clothing shops work and around 5pm they throw away a lot of used fabrics, some things are keepers some are really just trash), is there anything like that in Helsinki?

Thanks!!!!

Cheapest fabric store is probably Eurokangas, http://www.eurokangas.fi/index.php?page=1. But Helsinki doesn't really have a huge textile industry. Tampere used to, but I think much of that has shut down now. Household textiles are much bigger than fashion. I don't know many people who make their own clothes here and I don't know many shops that sell Finnish made clothes. Even in Helsinki most of the fashion shops sell imported fashions. The Design District has a few Finnish designers (Fredrikinkatu, Uudenmaankatu) but designers like Paola Suhonen are printing their own textiles (also Nanso and Marimekko). And IIRC, Ritva-Liisa Pohjalainen is up in Kuopio and most of the Rils stuff is made in places like Lithuania, Latvia and China. Hanna Sarén just shut down. There are a few young designers doing "recycled" fashion (one on Uudenmaankatu, one on Hameentie near the ethnic foodstores).

How about Estonia.... Tallinn still has a textile industry, especially linen.

Anyway, I'm not a fashion student ( ) so somebody else might have better advice. Good luck.

(PS: Marimekko has a factory store in Herttoniemi.... but it is mostly Marimekko prints. And the Paola Suhonen fabric is sold off in the Uudenmaankatu store on special days, you can get on the mailing list for an invite by asking in the shop. But again, it is mostly cotton prints)

Thanks for your replies, I stoped by this one mega fabric store by stockmans, I asked some questions and the women told me that she can give me a discount if I buy the whole roll. Not bad! but thanks I will do some research on the Tallinn and outlet factories (I didn't know about those).
