What about the teachers?

By the way, is this your first experience in a university in Finland?

I'm a mature student and over twice the age of the youngest in my group but do still feel young enough to mix with the freshers, i certainly dress like one of the gang. But beware that a lot of students are under or around 20 so if you're not 'down with the kids' i imagine it could be a little difficult. However, I went out on one of the mid-week freshers nights and watched as some left at 1am then at 3am the remainder bundled out of the club and drifted home so i went elsewhere with some mates and got home at 5.30am. Freshers, they don't make 'em like they used to!

I've been asked why i didn't apply for the Malmi program as it's evening based and therefore has a high proportion of business professionals which is obviously good for networking possibilities. For a start i didn't know about it and also i didn't want to go to Malmi everyday :D I will take the odd schmooze course in Malmi maybe from Jan onwards but i like it at Pasila and my intake are a really nice, lively, culturally diverse bunch. I'm happy. Depending on yours or Finnbrit's disposition you might want to consider having a look at what the Malmi stream has to offer?

Oh and be prepared for the changes in education, i certainly wasn't! I last studied in a different millenium where we sat in dusty lecture halls for hours, read huge tomes, wrote endless essays and sat long exams. Nowadays we all sit around chatting and giving positive feedback to each other before nipping off into an IT suite to videotape our presentations. It's odd, I don't feel I know any theory at all but at least the group cohesiveness is improving. :D

thanks for sharing MagicJ. I have wonder what it's like to be a mature student at a Finnish University. I'm 28 yrs old. I might be 29 by the time I get a placement. But, I love hearing stories about adults who pursue a degree later in life. I find it very inspirational. I will definitely be in for a 'educational shock' too. I'm used to being an independent student, work hard... study alone. It sounds dreadfully hard to earn an A or 5 for the group. And videotape the presentations? didn't you just start like a few weeks ago.. seems like the program is set up for the real-world business industry's environment.

Although I like the way lectures are held, the whole communication (questions-answers-experience sharing) thing , i find it difficult to do many things in one time. I mean, we have like 2-3 presentations in the end of the course, then we have PBL discussions every week (you have to prepare yourself, read articles and come up with info in your head for discussion), we have many week assignments (essays, mini-presentations, IT (word/powerpoint)) and finally we will have exam-week at each course end. For me personally it's difficult with time management, it seems there is no space for hobbies/free time, what to talk about working. (happy not working)
You have to be very dedicated to your studies.
Finally, I like the school. I like to be busy doing some important stuff, but would be happier to see more time for myself :) (now creating a different timetable where I have one day full-off the studies-related things :D )

Hei Vesper, i'll tell everybody i meet now that i'm an inspiration! Kiitos BTW you've got a decade on me so don't worry you're a wee whipper-snapper.

Forest Girl, I find that the lectures don't deliver a great deal of content*, i read all three articles for next week's pbl during the Kone lecture. That's my time management scheme. But in reality i'm used to writing 1,000-3,000 word essays all the time so a summary or team essay isn't too much. Meeting up with teams to collaborate might prove a problem but remember lectures aren't compulsory and as above* you probably get more out of the notes from BB.

Lectures aren't compulsory? I mean the lectures from adult studies right? Or is it the same for the day studies?

It depends on the subject and teacher. Some stuff you can take the final exam and pass, some stuff you need to attend the labs and project work, some stuff you need to show up in class... coding for example can be self-study or cramming...

I think it's not a bad thing, universities shouldn't be like the primary school :D

Yeah I noticed that too... I miss more contenct from the lectures. One thing is, that when we have these kind of (communication) lectures while seeing those powerpoint slides, I don't get what is needed for our exam. What do we have to learn, what is important? We don't write any notes and...it's weird. But maybe I just didn't adjust to this kind of studying yet.
