French's Mustard

Post by goodquestion » Fri Sep 25, 2009 3:33 pm

Where can I buy French's Mustard in Finland (yellow mustard)? I am a diabetic, and the sweet mustard is no good for me.

Thanks!

They sell Dijon atleast thats sugarfree and also then mustard powder if you're experimental enough to do your own.

I tried Dijon, and almost cried

I guess I will have to be experimental, I wonder if the mustard powder is available from white mustard seeds instead of black ... guess I will find out, or I will have import a crate of mustard from Canada

I don´t know what is the colour of the seeds mustard powder is made of but powder itself is light yellow.

the funky stores in hakaniemi sell all possible and a few impossible spices so they'd probably have whole mustard seeds as well...

Yes this is French mustard in Citymarkets - at least anything from brand Maille, which at least I have seen three products of - one is mustard with honey, maybe too sweet for the OP.

To the OP : if "Moutarde fine de Dijon" is too strong for you, try "Moutard à l'ancienne de Dijon" with whole mustard seeds. It may not make you cry, but still tasty and not sweet like sinappi. Found it at my local K-citymarket at least and makes a vinaigrette look great.

Otherwise the French delicacy shop Deli-Deli in Hakaniemi Market (Kauppahalli) or through internet ordering may have a good selection of mustards for you to try.

Anyway, like I said, I think you can get that in citymarkets in the Helsinki area. If not you should be able to find it from the little shop in the WTC in downtown Helsinki.

I didn't know the brand but I'm curious: does French's Mustard
tastes so different from any other brand to be irreplaceable?

Dunno, LIDL had some crap "American Mustard" during their theme week that doesn't differ much... I get from the Estonian deli Felix Pöltsamaa Sinep - thats a bit like half horseradish half mustard... lets say it wakes you up ;)

And to "goodquestion" - if you move here you might as well kiss goodbye to all your known brands in the USA. They're "whassdat" here. Its same sh***t usually but in a different package. No Velveeta you hear!

Most large grocery stores have an "Imported goods section" where you'll find North American items over-priced - such as:

French's Mustard, Kraft Dinner, Maple Syrup, etc.
Best of luck.
