Knockia en 900

Post by Seen Canary » Mon Oct 05, 2009 9:26 pm

Hei peeps

Does anyone have or used a Nokia N900? What is it like? DNA have one for 23 euros a month. I'm thinking of getting one because my 24kk phone contract expires this month. Is it worth it? What is the battery life? I've read some reviews online and they are generally positive. 3mm headphone jack, 5mp camera, HD screen, new GUI, accelerated graphics. Anyone out here with a heads up?

p.s. Can I use my DNA modem dongle (384kb) with the N900.

Kiitos :P

The N900 is a 3G/UMTS/HSPA device and has the same functionality built-in. It does not need a separate dongle. (Actually, the N900 can function as a replacement for your existing dongle if you connect it to your laptop!) See here for the specs.

It ain't out yet. Saying that, it'll be 600 from verkkokauppa:

The screen isn't HD, it's Resolution: 800 x 480 pixels (WVGA), which is very good on a phone.

I have seen a late development model in use, and was very impressed.

I plan on getting one.

Cheers me dears

I presumed it was out because DNA has it headlining it's home page.

As for the dongle use, just a couple of questions.

I pay 9.99 euros a month for unlimited access and downloads. I would rather use my dongle with the phone than pay additional internet data charges. Can I install mobile partner on the N900? If not, how do I get around this? Or, do I just replace the sim card in the phone with the one in the dongle?

Any help or advice would be welcome.

Sorry Richard, you're right. I think I meant high resolution (for a phone). :D

The dongle is a USB slave device. It seems the N900 cannot act as a USB host, due to a hardware limitation... so you can’t connect USB peripherals to it. Even if you could, it would be a bit pointless considering the N900 has the same functionality built-in as the dongle, anyway... Moreover, using an external device for Internet connections – powered by the N900 – would only drain the battery more quickly... and you’d have to carry two gadgets with you instead of only one.

“Mobile Partner” is Huawei’s Windows driver package (and/or connection manager) for their cellular modems.

The N900 is based on Maemo 5, which in turn is based on Linux. You can use Huawei cellular modems on Linux, too (if running Linux on a hardware platform that supports the USB host mode, such as an ordinary PC), but Huawei’s “Mobile Partner”, being a Windows-only software package, does not run on Linux. (There is equivalent software for Linux but it does not help you with the N900 if the phone can’t operate in USB host mode... as seems to be the case.)

Yes, that’s the way you would do it. If you find yourself carrying both the N900 and a laptop with you, you don’t really need the dongle anymore... just use the N900 as the cellular modem for your laptop.

Hold the front page.

I've just found out about the Nokia X6. After a long time spent pondering on mobile choice (my 24kk contract expires this month) between iphone 3gs, Nokia N900, Palm pre (don't know if this one is available on contract in Suomi) and various Samsung models I finally narrowed it down to two:

Nokia N900 or iphone3gs.

But, along comes the X6 and appears to blow the competition out of the proverbial H2O.

It really does have everything i'm looking for:

Large, capacative touch screen (no need for stylus)
5mp camera
A-GPS (Have to admit an ignorance re. versus bog standard gps)
32 jiggabites memory (in honour of Back to the Future)
35 hours continuous music playback
Good video resolution and fps
Twin LED flash for camera
etc

I know it's not a smartphone but ffs I deliver newspapers for a living :D .

The only downside appears to be Nokia's Symbian OS. A lot of negatory vibery surrounding this.

Can anyone (Jukka Aho i'm relying on you here  ) offer any views re. release date, suppliers, reaction etc.

kiitos

A=assisted, bog standard has _no_ idea where on earth it is when you turn it on, so it needs to watch for satellites and calculate it's position. Assisted gets some initial info from the mobile network -> faster initially.
