Are you over 65 and using Finland Forum?

Post by jessicapowell » Sat Oct 03, 2009 9:56 am

Hello! I am doing a (very small) research project for Human Ageing and Elderly Services. I am curious to see how many people that use Finland Forum are over 65. I know that I won't get a 'true' answer due to the fact that not everyone checks into the board all the time, but I wanted to just get an idea. I figure that most people move here for work, and if you are over 65, you probably won't be here for that purpose, but anyone who is over 65, using this forum...
Why are you in Finland?
Why are you using this forum?
Is Finland Forum easy to use for you?
Do you have any positive or negative experiences about the board that you would like to share?
Anything else you would like to add?
Thanks!
Jessica

It would be interesting to see the results...
Why are you in Finland?
Just one comment though, I don't think all FF users are resident in Finland. Many frequent users are resident elsewhere.

I know one British guy (not a user of FF) who has no connection to Finland but has ended up here, living on his own out in the sticks, following a strange set of circumstances. He came here as a pensioner, doesn't speak Finnish and is surviving on a UK state pension. I'm sure his case would skew any statistics in this area.

Well, it does not have to be someone who resides in Finland...only those who frequent the board. The idea is to have an understanding of how elderly people are responding to these type of social networking sites.
Thanks!

So, the question you want to answer is "how many", implying "out of a certain population", so it does
make a difference if you consider only 65+ FF-readers in Finland, or worldwide,
and also it means that you can know how big that population is.
In other words, if e.g. you find 10 persons, do you know if it is a good or a bad result, or even statistically irrelevant?

Anyway, you are looking for:
1) An English-speaking foreigner or Finn [in Finland]
2) 65+ y.o.
3) who is sufficiently at ease with computers
4) and can use 'virtual' social networks
5) and interested in foreigners life in Finland

Well, I think the sieve is quite fine

To be blunt, I am looking for anyone who is 65+ who can paint a picture of using Finland Forum. I am not looking for statistics, more of experiences. So the only catch is you must be 65+ and using Finland Forum.
This is not a big project, but rather a glimpse at elders using social networking sites.
Perhaps the original wording was poor, but I would appreciate any input from someone 65+ using Finland Forum.
Thanks!
Jessica

I know a social networking site where many (most?) people are over 65. That is www.sanaristikot.net. I am not over 65, not even 60, but I visit that site every weekend when I am doing HS Friday crosswords (<-- those are great gymnastics). I discovered that site only recently, but people seem to talk also about other things than crosswords. People have nics like "grandpa", "seventy five years", and so on.

They say you're only as old as your liver.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

Hi Jesica I'm 70+ and living in Finland for the past ten years , I dont Finn Talk! Im' English with a Finnish wife, I dont need Finnish to enjoy life, I do take a look on Finland Forum about once a week just to see how you guys tick. But I have never had need to respond before, The site is very easy to use and it gives me a kind of network of persons who are in the same position as myself, I know some of your members will say I miss out by not speaking the lingo ,but I don't , I go to the Gym, Sauna, and swiming twice each week, with several Finnish pal's I teach at the local Kansalaisopisto, I'm also a volunteer Art teacher, and attend weekly lessons on Art. my hobby is oil painting I have held three solo exhbitions in the past two years , I do all our food shopping, quit a bit of the cooking , plus Gadning and DIY, in winter I go Ice swimming and in the summer I'm out on my bike or walking , last year I went over to the UK and did the long distance Coast to Coast Walk 196 miles in 12 days , My advice is Keep moving and old age wont catch up with you . Keep up the good work at FF, cheers Pedro

Well Jesica, I'm 66 today (Oct. 5) and I use the forum all the time (almost daily) to keep up with what's going on in Finland. I no longer live in Finland but try to maintain my Finnish language abilities and keep a finger on the pulse of expats in Finland.

Wow some interesting responses there. Just wondering if the OP has had many other responses? Would love to hear the findings of your research!

Purs ... errr ... I mean Hank... Hank is actually 28, he just looks like he's 73... he's had a rough life ... then again, life is hard for all Finnish men... apparently.
