noticed how many people smoke here?

Post by brengun » Sat Oct 10, 2009 7:59 am

Its just an observation, but its quite remarkable how common it is to see people smoking in the streets here,, just wondered if smoking is a measure of social stress ,which I believe it is, then this signifies a really major problem and one wonders why the medical profession, for instance ,are not asking serious questions. discuss.

It's a measure if social something for sure. The people I know who work as cleaners, or in factories, or in bars, tend to smoke. Those in more professional positions, don't tend to smoke. I've never really understood why this is.

You don't read the news? They're already drafting legislation with the ultimate aim of making Finland tobacco-free.

Just don't mention the subject, "smoking on balconies".

So where are you from that people do not smoke on the street? What is your stance on the amount of drunks on the street, is that do to social stress as well?

People smoke because the are addicted, people also smoke because the enjoy it. I have know CEOs, garbage men, doctors and mechanics that smoke, I don't think professional position dictates the frequency of smoking.

An American source for you:
Occupation is significant factor in whether you smoke

But as said earlier, I still don't understand why.

Did you read the study or just the abstract?. The numbers come from 1997 and a survey of only 880 people. Of the survey "organization conditions" is only 1 of 5 "modifying conditions"

Just the abstract.
catfish78 wrote:The numbers come from 1997
Are you suggesting things have changed drastically in 12 years?
catfish78 wrote: and a survey of only 880 people.
What do you mean, "only"? From what I remember of statistics, a sample of that size returns accurate enough figures to make general conclusions. Increasing the sample size into the 1000s, even tens of 1000s, does not substantially increase accuracy of the data.

To be clear, are you disagreeing with the statement that, "Occupation is significant factor in whether you smoke" ???

Yes, in my opinion I would not say that occupation is a "significant" factor.

But the bigger question is why the OP uses all caps in his subject titles.

It seems to be a widely accepted fact, backed up by much research, that class has an effect on whether you're likely to smoke, or not.
manual working class groups are substantially more likely to smoke daily than are the professional and managerial classes.

I can't see why you won't accept the fact? Please don't tell me that you're a smoker, who now feels like they're being tarred with the "working class" brush? :P

I am offended by "working class" I don't even have a job  .
And Fact is a strong word. Using "more likely" does not mean "fact" And as far as that study goes, I can't read it. Abstracts can say lots about nothing.

Ouch! Sorry :D

catfish78 wrote: Abstracts can say lots about nothing.
Depends who writes them :P But I doubt that research supervisors and/or journal editors, linked to such well known institutions such as Harvard and Oxford, would allow phrases such as, "Occupation is significant factor in whether you smoke" and "manual working class groups are substantially more likely to smoke daily than are the professional and managerial classes.", if this were not the case.

Anyway, everyone is free to own opinion in life, enjoy your weekend. :D

They smoke on the streets because they cannot smoke inside.

I live in Vegas, and there is smoke everywhere.

I can't imagine that there'd be a ton of smoke compared to here. But yeah, people probably smoke out on the streets there because they can't smoke inside.

I'm a non-smoker and find the whole deal with smoking annoying, but, hey. If they aren't smoking where it doesn't really bother me, I don't care.

As for the study of occupations, well.... Depends on the profession, probably. I'm sure a high ranking Tobacco CEO in the 80s smoked like a chimney, and even now, I'm sure there are Technology CEOs that smoke. Hell, isn't our perception of a rich guy who owns a company an Englishman with a large belly, mixed with a cigar and a glass of Brandy? Well, mine is.

Do statistics back that up? No. But my point being is that occupation doesn't necessarily contribute to smoking or not.
Where I live, it gets up to 55C in the Summer and it's rare to find someone that speaks Finnish. How's your sauna?
