Well, the greatest stress on electronic/electrical stuff is when you turn it on. So if you keep doing it all day you'll shorted the life of the equipment - I usually put the computer off at night.

I also noticed that you can buy magic socket extensions that cut the power to all peripherals when, say, a computer is turned off.

If your heat is thermostatically controlled, won't it automatically adjust for the heat generated by the equipment? If you had air conditioning, I can see how it would be more economical to turn off the boxes in the summer. But who has AC in Finland?

Computer hardware is fairly nasty stuff if not properly recycled. If you change it when you feel you need something faster or fancier, maybe the additional power cycles don't matter. But if you change it only when it wears out, doesn't it make sense to avoid wearing it out sooner by not subjecting it to constant power cycling?
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

And after the first full year people wonder why their electric bill hasn't changed that much... well probably that is already history as people understand technology better, but I have seen first hand when people wonder about the savings in almost chilly room during hot summer day...
