waffle iron

Hi,
I'm looking to buy a waffle iron as a gift. The only place I thought to check so far was Clas Ohlsson, which they had but they had only one kind and it made heart-shaped waffles while I was hoping to find one that made more traditional square Belgian style kinds. I live in Turku but travel between Turku and Helsinki occasionally so if anyone has any idea where I can get such a thing in either city, please feel free to make suggestions. I'm not too familiar with the non-large chain stores...does Finland have a kitchen/cooking supplies chain store? Something like Sur La Table in the US...Anyway, thanks!

Do you make your own waffle batter from scratch or from a mix? In the US I always used mixes because they were always available and made things sooo easy...

Then it is just like Finland, except we don't have mixes and easy...

I made them from scratch ands it is very easy, here you go:
400g flour
1/3 l milk
100g butter (real butter please)
75g castersugar
2 eggs
2 ts leivinjauhe (baking powder)
salt

Melt the butter.
Mix together the floor, baking powder, salt and sugar.
Beat the eggs and add them to the floor mix, then add the melted butter. Incorporate the milk.
Ready!

Cook about 3 min.

Stockmann in Turku probably has them.

There are a few cook shops in Helsinki: one on Kluuvikatu and one on the corner of Bulevardi and Fredrikinkatu (Chez Marius) and another one down on Korkeavuorenkatu. Can't remember all the names though, but I think they all have websites. The one on Kluuvikatu (or is it Mikonkatu????) is the biggest.

but they look a bit skinny. The rectagular Belgian waffles are much thicker.

I have seen a sandwich machine that doubled up as a waffle iron (it came with two sets of irons), but can't remember where.

Yep, Penelope, I was thinking the same with the waffle makers I've seen so far...they make waffles that are either thin or circular ...nothing wrong with that but I had the big thick square Belgian style waffles in mind as that's what my friend likes. Hmmm ....the search continues...

Are the circular ones too small, so you cannot cut them to square?

OK - you would like to have the thick rectangle ones.

There have been some sandwich grills on the market here with interchangeable "irons"- including parts for square Brussels type waffles. At home we have one from Moulinex, and also OBH Norcdica and severin have had similar models.
Severin products are imported by Eflving Oy - contact them and check there where you can buy one in Finland.

Hi, when i saw the article, "waffle iron", my prejudice kicked in,. I thought," what a load of old middle class waffle" but now how sorry I feel for this. I realised ,hey its fab. , i can quell my son,s unlimited craving for carbs, and bread is so expensive!. Thanks for the idea.
