Some members of the Chamberlain clan wore monocles but that’s probably too obscure a reference... Perhaps it’s just a generic poke at the style of the late 19th century / early 20th century dandies/gentlemen/nobility.

You could be on to something. I wear hats all the time - even in the house - like now, actually.

Yeah, it's just the English gent thing, bowler hat, cane. monocle...but it's long gone I guess.
