ID picture for babies

Post by Lisa 15 » Thu Oct 29, 2009 1:29 am

Hi!
I need to do some passport pictures for my little one. Any good places? I've heard that some photographer have some kind of table on which you can have the baby lying so that it is easy to take a correct picture, but I haven't find any place like that yet.
My little one is only 3 months old, so pretty ard to hold her straight

This does not perhaps help you, but for those who have a good digital camera "doing it yourself" maybe a good option. I did that myself with our 4 month old. Set the baby to a sitting positions with some low cushions next to a ordinary white wall, took a few dozen shots in 2-3 minutes and then chose the one where the subject was looking forward and had the head most straight. I had a flash unit that could be directed to give indirect lighting (which made things simpler) and in the end had to copy paste some extra wall to one edge of the picture make the positioning match the guidelines. The resulting file was sent online to photo shop for printing. Accepted without a problem for a passport.

To get the good crop of the picture was in the end much more time consuming than the actual photography, but I'd still prefer this to the task of taking the baby to a pro.

Here are the technical requirements of a valid passport photo from the Finnish Police. They also have an English version of the guidelines, available for download as a PDF.

Are they fussy with the photo requirements also when it's about little kids?
Because anyway, if you think of how much the head of a 3 months old baby will change
already in the next few months, what's the point of even trying A.I. photo recognition?

yes, they are fussy. I did my daughters in the UK by lying her on a white blanket and taking the pics from above - which was fine for her UK passport... BUT for my son I went a photographer in Turku who basically held up his head by pinching the back of his neck  he was only a few weeks old and the photos are awful. As our trip was cancelled I really wish I'd waited til he could hold up his head!
