Hi,
I have been trying to find laws/regulations and just any info on trapping in Finland...specifically trapping Hare/Rabbit but also any furbearers like the mink and such.
anyone able to tell me anything about it, or point me at the right place?

Re: Trapping?
My SO said mink and supikoira are OK to trap on your own land. Otherwise you need the permission of the landowner. Never heard of anyone trapping hares though. What do you trap them with? Lettuce?
My kids said that only "live" trapping is allowed (ie using cages). But that might be an Espoo thing, it could be different in Lapland. They weren't sure. Traps that injure the animals but don't kill them are a definite no, everywhere. The kids thought that traps that kill the animals outright are only OK for very small things (they said smaller than a kärpät, which is very small). But they didn't seem too sure. But then my eldest said he thought there were a few special rules for a small group of trappers in remote parts of Lapland....

Re: Trapping?
Yeah i was aware that trapping anything in a way that might only hurt or slowly kill was against the law(and against my ethics) so i was looking into trapping them live, also know that any trapping in or around towns where there is the chance of accidentally catching pets is a big NO NO so that again reinforces my idea of using live traps.
Depends on the season what you can use, but simply i wanted to put traps in areas where i have seen enormous amounts of hare/rabbit tracks and would not bait them but put them on the more used paths.
Have not gone to that place yet, was waiting for "kana" season to be over since i am just going for hare and possibly varmints(fox, supikoira, minks and such).
Just occurred to me yesterday, was at a lavuu within Rovaniemi town and saw an abundance of tracks(know that trapping public places is probably forbidden but also was wondering if i could find such areas for instance on public land outside of towns, within hunting areas if that would be allowed...since most tell me i have no chance in hunting them without a dog).
And also wondering about trapping in my own backyard...since it seems there are fresh tracks here every morning!

Re: Trapping?
Pets are kept on the leash. If you get cat or dog in your trap, you just deliver them to the animal warden, or ask him/her get it from you. You can usually even borrow traps from them to get that pesky cat that keeps on pissing to your door.Halldor K wrote:Yeah i was aware that trapping anything in a way that might only hurt or slowly kill was against the law(and against my ethics) so i was looking into trapping them live, also know that any trapping in or around towns where there is the chance of accidentally catching pets is a big NO NO so that again reinforces my idea of using live traps.

Re: Trapping?
Yeah i am aware that pets are not allowed to run free(specially not cats) but none the less i do not want to accidentally kill someones pet...relations with the neighbours are hard enough as it is hahaha
But would most assuredly have a warden/pe(s)t control take care of any i would trap.
haha thanks for that link, i had it bookmarked already along with a bunch of other resources, and i can easily make my own traps if i can get my hands on the right materials.
But as far as just going ahead and doing it...well i would not want to be breaking the law and risk loosing my gun/hunting license.
