Wisdom tooth removal

Post by PoisonLalla » Tue Nov 03, 2009 2:29 pm

So I need to get in a dental surgery to remove a wisdom tooth.
I was wondering if it's possible to have the surgery in public dentists or if I have to go to a private one, and how much would this kind of surgery costs.
Also if it takes long to get the appointment 'cause I'm a bit in a hurry with this tooth and I'm not quite sure if it would be better to remove it here or to go back in Italy to have the surgery.

Do you also know some good dentist in Espoo or Helsinki?

If you are in a hurry then your only option is to go private. To go public you gotta get in line and that could take months and months and months.

It will not be a long wait (even the same day in some cases) if you phone at 8 am in the morning telling them how much pain you are in and that you can not sleep  always works for me, but you will have to got to the dentail Hospital in Town.

If that does not work this guy is good http://www.lotusstar.fi/hammashoito/site/inEnglish.php

True but when you call like that and go in for "emergency" reasons they only do what they need to do so you can get by until your turn will come up in the normal waiting line. Of course who are they to tell you if you really are in pain or not. But they can usually tell for certain things. But that system does work, I have done it myself
Like once when I had a filling pop out they just put a temporary one in, then put me on the normal waiting list and then when my turn comes up (it's tomorrow actually :) ) I can go in and have the permanent filling done. Kind of dumb but I guess they have their reasons.

One time it happened to me (I was living in Helsinki) that one tooth chipped or actually cracked.
It was Friday, I called the public service and they asked me if it was urgent and there if was pain
and I said that there was no pain but it was quite urgent (as a piece of tooth came off).
So I got appointment for next Monday where they did the basic quick cleaning and reconstruction care,
and then booked me for a second visit to complete the job, this time of 'non-urgent' type,
which was at earliest about 3 months later.

Unless things have changed in the last 2 years, go with the public service

3 months for me to get in to have my wisdom teeth surgically removed. They did a good job and it was worth the wait. I went through public dentist.

How much did it cost you to have the wisdom teeth pulled at the public dentist? My wife is gonna have all 4 pulled in a few weeks. I was just wondering. Thanks!

Is a´she going to have all 4 out at the same time?? I had two out at a time , and the pain after was un real , I was off work for around 4 days after, it does not cost that much, if it was a big sum I think I would remember.

Actually I have no idea how they are going to do it, if all 4 will come out at once or not. I won't tell her about you getting 4 days off work. She'll get too scared. I had mine pulled when I was 19, all 4 at once. For me it was easy, I was sleeping for the whole thing, when I woke up it was all done. And I went to work the very next day. But it was done in the US. I heard here its just usually local anesthesia. I was just curious what it would cost, obviously it's less that what a private dentist would charge but I'd be interested to know.

They usually take x-rays first to know if they can be pulled or is an operation needed. And usually it is two at a time. I remember my upper ones were pulled but the lower ones had very long and somehow twisted roots, so they needed an operation.

Check your county's webpages.
In my case it would be something like: (x2 cos they don't usually do 4 teeth at one time, afaik)
Käyntimaksu 9 €
Puudutus 5,80 €
Röntgenkuva kpl 5,80 €
Hampaan poisto 12,80 €
Hampaan leikkauksellinen poisto 37,30 €
so in worst case scenario you are looking at ~100e/visit + painkillers.

The point is that the biggest pain comes after the anesthesia is gone. Then even the best painkillers don't help. So in case of 4 teeth multiply this pain by 4. In any case, maybe you have a different pain threshold. It has nothing to do where you have it done, whether it's US or on the moon. ;)

Oh and after the whole thing at least my sister had to stick to baby food and soups for a couple of days, using a straw. ;)

I didn't mean that the pain was different because I had it done in the US, I just threw that in there because of the way it was done... But I wonder how it would have been on the moon? That would be cool. You are right though, everyone experiences pain and other things for that matter in different ways. For me it wasn't bad at all, no swelling either.

I as well had 2 done at a time. Definitely take the ibprofuen they prescribe you, it cut the pain better than the codeine stuff.

Overall it was about 115 euros for me, 100 for the procedure and 15 euros for the meds. We also bought tons of ice cream since I couldn't eat normal food and some Knorr soups as well.
