For instance: why was it dark at night in the middle of the summer?

The only Finnish film I've seen is Pelikani Mies (Pelican Man). It was off the Richter Scale. I remember I watched Man Bites Dog and for years I thought it was a Finnish movie. I was completely ignorant of Suomi at that time. A friend rented it and said I had to watch this mad movie from Finland. We were both stoners at the time but I vaguely remember wondering why they spoke French in Finland.

My nomination goes to Star Wreck :D
Maybe not the best Finnish film of all times, but at least the best sci-fi Finnish film so far,
and a pretty well done work for being an amateur job.

Aki Kaurismäki's "Man Without a Past"

Mies vailla menneisyyttä
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMTc1Nj5E9k

This is a classic and my favourite Finnish film. I love the "friendly" service in the employment office for the man without a name! hehe :P

I once wrote Kaurismäki a letter about this film, but he never answered! How Finnish of him! hehehe :P

Tomorrow, I'm off to see a 4-hour lecture about the Kalevala in a nearby church put on by the Canadian Friends of Finland. Maybe I should pack a flask for these 4 hours of Finn filled Fun?!! hehehe

Hah. No, it means both...and can be used for dick too. That's 1 euro thanks!

Back to films....Anyone seen that 'Sauna' movie?
Sauna is gorgeous feast for my hungry eyes and incredibly poetic. Must see, definitely. During last year I saw also Maa on syntinen laulu & Musta Jaa.

I dunno Finnish cinematography enough to give a vote to a certain film as "best ever", but this thread is very interesting and will give me some directions what to search for

We watched Musta Jää a couple of months ago. Thought it was pretty good. If a friend asked to know what contemporary Finnish movies are like, Musta Jää seem to me typical enough that I would lend it to them.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

Well that ain't a "good" film... I bought "Sauna" from the toss bin at Citymarket. Pretty good... though it was a bit... umm... could have been more to it.

You can watch the complete Ponterosa in 7 or 8 pieces on Youtube.
