Holiday in Finland.

Post by msorsa » Sun Sep 13, 2009 8:03 pm

I was born in Helsinki and left for Africa when I was 5 years old. I have never been back. Now I feel the need to visit Finland to rediscover my birth country.
Where would you suggest I go? A rail trip would be good and I love fishing. Planning my trip in July next year.
Thank you.

I know nothing about fishing but if you type "fishing in Finland" to Google you get the answers, including this one: http://www.fishinginfinland.com/

And from Helsinki you should check the area where you lived even if you don´t remember it. Visit Turku, Porvoo, Rauma, Tampere. And rent a cottage for a week somewhere, summer cottage is something as Finnish as it gets. http://www.lomarengas.fi

Train is fine (www.vr.fi usually has some summer offers), but if you want easy access to fishing places and maybe a cottage, rental car is a better option.

This might be for you, too. I don´t fish but I hike, and I use these pages every year: http://www.villipohjola.com/default.asp?Section=59

It looks like you have enough information already, but I just want to say that I think it's great that you are going back to explore your roots! I agree with what EP said... you should go back to where you were born. I have not been to Finland but I am also in the process of planning a trip there, so I've been doing some research as well. I think the Tampere area sounds really nice for a summer vacation... besides fishing I think you can do things like hiking, canoeing, boating, etc. I think I also read there are some neat festivals. And as EP mentioned, I think the idea of renting a cottage sounds really nice. I've also looked into some sites for this. I especially liked this one:

They look really cute and their prices seem pretty fair to me. This site also has good options for renting a cottage in Finland:

Otherwise if you are looking for hotels, I found this site:

I hope you have a nice trip!
