Best place to buy a winter coat in Helsinki?

Post by Cloudberry » Fri Nov 20, 2009 6:06 am

We'll be arriving in Helsinki in a litle over a week and I'm beginning to panic about where I'll find a winter coat. I arrived in Finland in December a couple of years ago in the same predicament and wasted over a week finding the "right" coat (but where is that coat now you ask? well it seems to have disappeared! I may have accidently given it to charity or it could be in one of the many many boxes inside our shipping container).

So, rather than waste time and be super frustated I thought it would be wise this time to get a list of suitable places to look for a coat. Any ideas? I need an XL size too so none of those little petite shops please

The sales start after Christmas. Madness to buy a coat now.

It isn't even cold. I go out in a raincoat or a jacket most days.

But if you can say what your definition of the right coat is.... wool, down, Goretex??? Tailored? Sportswear? Long, short?

You can wait for the sales. I wear the same jacket now that I wore in June. Except now I wear also a sweater. It is +7°. Go to a UFF store (used clothes) and get one that costs 5 €. Then buy one you like from the sales after a couple of weeks.

Fida had 50% off last week and I went into their store in Hakaniemi and found a REALLY nice grey wool and cashmire coat for 20€ (ie 10€ in the sale) - it looked as good as new. It was 4 sizes too big for me    One of my kids got a (REAL) sheepskin coat from the Red Cross sale in Fiskars for 5€ last year!!!! In perfect condition :D

Personally I find those down jackets too hot and I feel like I am walking around in a sleeping bag. I have two and was seriously considering recycling them as tea cosies. They are warm and they keep the wind out, but it just hasn't been that cold during the last few years. They are useless in the rain (eg like today AND yesterday and most of last winter).

The local brand of down jackets is Joutsen http://www.joutsen.fi/index.php/en/clothing They are expensive but great quality if you can afford it.

I've got a lambswool B-9 bomber jacket... its us useless - too warm (size 4xl 52/62 for sale cheap).
Layered clothing rocks... esp. today with that horizontal drizzle. Though my leather jacket smells like a genetic manipulation of a wet dog and a goat if thats imaginable.

Hi!

You could just look around, you might find good deals, especially if they are "so-last-year" models :)

I bought a very good jacket from [was it] Stadium, I think the make is Everest(?). I think it is one of those down jackets, very light, but not just warm, but HOT! I went IIRC sometime August last year, and I got the 2007 model for 34 EUR, the tag said normal price 107 EUR or something. The whole of last winter, I wore just that over my shirt, even when I took my dog for a walk in the fields. Really warm.

Kind regards.
