Christmas crackers
Re: Christmas crackers
For other n00bs who don't know what christmas cracker is:
"Christmas crackers or bon-bons are an integral part of Christmas celebrations in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, other Commonwealth countries, Ireland and countries of the former Soviet Union (where it is called "хлопушка"). A cracker consists of a cardboard tube wrapped in a brightly decorated twist of paper, making it resemble an oversized sweet-wrapper. The cracker is pulled by two people, and, much in the manner of a wishbone, the cracker splits unevenly. The split is accompanied by a small bang produced by the effect of friction on a chemically impregnated card strip (similar to that used in a cap gun)."

I bought mine last year online, forget the name of the company, and I was then ill over Christmas, so Christmas was a total write-off. We'll use them this year.... wish we could've kept the hotel room we booked

It was probably one of these websites

Re: Christmas crackers
I've never seen them at shops, not a "thing" here at all - but I remember at school, when the word came up somewhere, I was wondering whether a Christmas cracker would be a festive variation ofUpphew wrote:For other n00bs who don't know what christmas cracker is:

Re: Christmas crackers
I guess the closest American "Christmas" tradition is the Pull-My-Finger Santa Doll currently at http://www.pullmyfinger.com.
The really bizarre thing is that all sorts of pullmyfinger domains exist, but apparently for the purpose of redirecting to the highest short-term bidder or something like that. I suppose that's one form of Yankee ingenuity.

OMG, tell me this isn't so:richard berman wrote:They have them in Behnfords in the WTC http://www.behnfords.fi
You know those three little photos they have on the front page?
The second two are nearly 1.5 MB each. They've put 2592×1944 images (probably at full quality) that get browser-scaled to 212×133. It's insane!
In fact, not one of the photos I've examined so far at the Behnford's site has been actual size. They're all browser-scaled down or up from some non-optimized image. They must have just had a secretary plug a banner and products into some template.

Re: Christmas crackers
All the leftovers from the Anglican bazaar are still available for purchase. As of this morning there were only three boxes of crackers left, and they have probably been sold by now, so I think Behnfords is probably the best place for those. If anyone is desperate for mincemeat, Christmas puddings, marmalade, Cadbury's chocolate, Oxo cubes, Saxo stuffing, Yorkshire pudding mix, cream crackers and stuff like that then PM me and I'll see what I can do.
If I have time (probably Tuesday next week) then I'll compile a list of what's left and advertise on here.

Re: Christmas crackers
A few empty toilet rolls, a bit of left over christmas wrapping paper, a bit of celotape with a few rather naff gifts and notsofunny jokes
scribbled down on scraps of paper thrown inside. . . . what more do you want
Rather that than spend an absolute f'n fortune at Behnfords - the most overpriced shop in Helsinki..
Yeah aa'm sure it's alot cheaper to order online from somewhere, like most things these days eh ?

But they can't fly airmail, so it might be too late for Xmas.Andythefinn wrote: Yeah aa'm sure it's alot cheaper to order online from somewhere, like most things these days eh ?
They are quite easy to make (toilet rolls, wrapping paper, tissue paper hat, cracker jokes are downloadable from the internet), but you don't get the "cracker" thingy.
