Hi All,
Laura and I wanted to know if anyone wanted to meet in town either on Friday or Saturday for a few beers.
Drop us a line if you're interested. Anywhere will do, so long as it's easy to drink and chat at the same time

Anyone fancy beers in Helsinki this weekend?

I'm rather partial to William K. on Annankatu as it's a lovely local place for beer and chat where you can actually hear people talk most of the time, even on weekends, and most of the bar is a non-smoking section.
But pick a day, place and time as it's winter and most of us don't need an excuse to have a few pints :)

Hallo Claython!
Lang niet gezien!
Ben je weer in 't land?
Hoe lang deze keer?
Helaas ben ik dit weekend elsewhere.
Misschien volgende week?
(Ik heb Laura's telefoonnummer (en één keer geprobeerd met betrekking tot een Nederlandse avond), maar het nummer bestaat niet. Waarschijnlijk heb ik een foutje gemaakt met intypen toen je me het nummer gaf).

Ah Good, I guess you should know, you're from New Holland. (Good old Tasman!)

Tasman wasn't there until 1642. It was Hartog who was the first European (Dutch also) there and that was in 1616. The Dutch did a fair bit of sailing to Australia in those days. Don't know why they didn't want to stay.

How does Saturday evening sound then? If you pick the place and let me know where it is (general directions) we can meet you all there for around 8 or 9pm.

Yes, you're correct

! I guess I forgot because there has never been so much written about Hartog, compared to Tasman. Also Tasman gave name to a far bigger island than Hartog did
Why the Dutch never stayed? Not sure, but this is what I think. When Hartog sailed the Australian West coast, it happened in a time the maps showed still many white areas. So the purpose was to discover land and draw a map of it. Exploiting the land was the next biggest hobby of the ancient Dutch, but what to do with the Australian West coast??? (I remember that the VOC was not even interested in mappng the East coast. Too dangerous!) Indonesia was by far a better choise and the Australian gold was not found until much later. Dutch presence on all continents in the 17th and 18th century was always because of trade, never to expand the kingdom, like England, Spain and Portugal did. I do have some questionmarks myself about the cape colony -South Africa. Not sure what made them to stay there

Sorry to mess up your thread, Claython and Arno. Also sorry I can never make it to Hki to join in. Car just will not survive that long trips anymore...

Oh, and something else; I read your reply in the dog thread! Just do what you're doing with your Border. It's the best! Keeping him on the lead is a crime, if you'd ask me (Have owned a Border Collie as well, while living in NL. Is yours a worker?)

That would be the same like if a Finnish researcher would discover a new element and call it "Hallonium". van Diemen was Tasman's superior whatever..? For those who don't know: Tasmania was frst called van Diemensland (by Tasman). And while you're here, Hank, waddayou know about Cape Town and such?

Yes van Diemen was a colonial governor and responsible for sending Tasman in search of the great southern land. Tasmania was still known as Van Diemen's Land until 1855. U2 sang about being sent there on their Rattle and Hum album. Van Diemen's Land was one of the harshest convict settlements in Australia.
Sorry for ruining the thread! Did someone say beer?

Wasn't there a poem by Emily Dickinson that went something like
If only centuries delayed,
I'd count them on my hand,
Subtracting till my fingers dropped
Into Van Diemen's land.
I've always wondered why would she write this... and what should it mean?
