It depends on the island, which winter and even what side of the island(s). Once I was in December two full weeks in Teneriffe (north side), and it rained every single day. It rained so much that the streets were flooding. Same time, same island, the south side didn´t see a drop of rain. Again in December on La Gomera, it rained a lot. And on La Palma, occational rain, occational sun. So, who knows.

Went 3 times in winter (3 different years obviously). Not really my kind of holiday, so I don't really know how I ended up there 3 times, but that's another story............

OK, weather: 1st time was in Playa des Ingles in Gran Canaria in November. Weather was about 25c from about 11am until about 4 pm, then started to cool down. Otherwise, would NOT recommend Playa des Ingles, it is tacky, full of tacky people - think boomboxes around the pool - everyone drunk, blaring nightclubs, but then again, maybe that's what you want, in which case, go for it. But seriously, most of the people seemed to be from, em, mmm, how do I say this? Lower socio-economic groups?? (have to be careful, 'cos Brengun and Sean C will be after my facist ar*e otherwise)

2nd and 3rd times was in Los Cristianos in the south part of Tenerife. The weather was actually quite nice, about 27c and the place was less (IMHO) "tacky" - I hate to say this, but there were not many Irish or British, mainly continentals and so the behaviour was better. There was another part to the general area though which was quite tacky. It is said that the north part of Tenerife is cloudy and rainy, the south is supposed to be better.

Actually at least those three Canary Islands I mentioned are very good for hiking, not tacky at all. You just have to avoid the tacky parts. (and La Gomera and La Palma don´t even have tacky parts)

Yes, I heard La Gomera was very nice, and the mountainous areas of Tenerife are gorgeous, surprisingly lush and the air really fresh. I suppose I just meant the built up touristed places (one holiday was the result of a last minute thing and was cheap but awful).
