Travel during Maternity leave

Post by vade » Mon Dec 07, 2009 7:53 pm

I'm now on my maternity leave and receiving KELA benefits. I'm Planning to go to my native place for few months. How long can i stay away from finland, so that it doesn't affect KELA benefits.

Thanks in adv.

How far pregnant are you?

What about your neuvola check-ups?

You need to check with the airline you want to fly with. You need a doctors certificate after 27 weeks if I remember correctly and you cant fly after 36 weeks.

Other than that I doubt Kela are really interested as long as you are still a resident. You do need to check with neuvola though as they can be a bit funny (in the odd sense) and may be difficult over the doctors certificate if they think you will be gone too long and missing care appointments.

Well there you may well have some problems.

Once your baby is born in the Finnish hospital they are given a temp social security number, and then you get the proper one shortly after. You need to complete forms for your baby's name to be registered. The sooner all these bits are completed and you fill in more kela forms so that the child benefit can be paid. They wont pay it if your chid moves out of Finland and I think under these circumstances they wont consider your child as living in Finland.

In all honestly I think you would be best to reconsider your plans as I do think you are going to run into a lot of problems. And Kela are a law to themselves and there is usually no chance to argue your case! Personally I would have my baby here, do everything that is required of you, get your babies passport and then go for a trip.

Ahh my hubby has mentioned something I forgot, you have to be going to the neuvola apointments in order to claim the benefits. I assume this also applies to once the baby is born as this is one way they have of keeping check on the mothers and babys health. There is also the point over you needing to be in Finland 6 months before the baby is born to claim the benefits.

As far as I know you need to have a neuvola visit in order to receive the rest of your maternity leave money (= vanhempien raha). Only then you get a proof which you have to bring to KELA.
