Looking for private English lessons

Post by umit » Wed Dec 02, 2009 4:15 pm

A friend of mine is looking for private English lessons from preferably a native speaker. His English is a little bit higher than beginner level. He lives in Helsinki. He is quite flexible with the lesson hours and can arrange a venue for the sessions. He would like to take 7-8 hours per week...

If you are interested please feel free to make an offer here on the thread or by PM.

Can you be a little more specific, there are quite a few different native english speakers here on Finland forum. Does he want to improve his speaking skills or written skills, does he want general, technical, grammatical or colloquial(vernacular) style english. Would he prefer learning American English, British, Irish, Australian. Does he have a preference for times to meet or is that flexible. The biggest question is how much is he willing to pay is he willing to pay the standard rates for Finland or is he on a budget. Is this to start immediately or ?

Hopefully this helps him weed out some

Also, I'd be sure to require other qualifications that just 'native speaker', e.g. (language) teaching background. Personally I would have to start (re)learning myself if I was to know Finnish grammar, let alone teach it. Being a native speaker and being able to teach the specifics of a language are quite different things.

Thanks for your replies guys...

As I said his English is just a little bit better than a complete beginner. For now he doesn't have high expectations like learning academic level English, but just wants to improve his understanding and speaking skills to be able to comfortably cope with everyday conversations.

The accent (British, American, Australian, etc.) is not so important. When he speaks it will be something completely different. :ochesey: BTW, do Irish speak English???

I assumed those who are interested in this ad would have some English language teaching background or somehow confident that they can do it. Anyway, it won't be a long term contract... If he isn't satisfied with the first lesson, there won't be the second...

As for how much he is willing to pay... You are the service provider, he is the customer. You define your rate and he decides if he is willing to pay that or not... (Actually I have no idea what the standard rate for Finland is. If you tell me that, I can be more specific...)

Actually, Ireland does have its own native Irish Gaelic language, but English has been the main language in Ireland for a very long time, and these days Irish speakers are a small minority, although efforts are being made in Ireland to preserve the Irish language, see: Gaeltacht

Hello Umit, I'd be very happy to help your friend.

My name is Alexander Kanbar and I’m originally from London, England. I’m 27 years of age and have been living in Helsinki for the past year having met my Finnish girlfriend while studying for my Masters Degree in Communication.

What I do specifically is discuss various topics (hobbies, culture, work, socializing, travel,) with people who want to improve their overall English Speaking ability, while I politely correct and of course encourage them as we go along. My sessions relate to occasions where my clients are required to speak English, therefore a great opportunity to practice and improve their confidence for situations that may happen in the future. Sessions are fun, relaxed, conversational, but most importantly, rewarding!

Currently I meet with individuals on an hourly or two hour basis!

If you’d like further details (price etc) please don’t hesitate to contact me, my email address is kanbar82@hotmail.com.

Yours very truly,
Alex

Thanks for all the replies from here, PM and e-mail... We have contacted a tutor and it is likely that we will agree on tuition conditions...

But, feel free to continue sending your posts here. Cos, it would be a reference for others who will be searching English tutors or I might need some more in the future ;)

Cheers!
