Moving to Jyvaskla
Moving to Jyvaskla
Hey folks:
Looking for some help - I am from Canada and will be moving to Jyvaskla with my husband this summer. I was hoping for some recommendations for an orthodontist.
I have oral braces and will need a good orthodontist while I'm living in Jyvaskla for the next few years. (I only need about 1-1.5 years of braces left).
As well - I'm pregnant - expecting in November and was wondering what to expect in terms of health care,pre-natal classes (I am almost 20 weeks) and any good doctors in Jyvaskla.
Thanks everyone!

Re: Moving to Jyvaskla
Hi.
I don't think you will be able to benefit from the free healthcare for your pregnancy. You won't have been here long enough. You probably won't even get the great KELA box of stuff we get when having a child.
When you get here you'll have to go to KELA straight away and ask about the health benefits. I think you'll be paying out of pocket for the birth of your child and probably will only be allowed to collect the basic maternity leave pay.
Jyvaskla isn't the biggest place around. You should try to contact the social welfare office there and ask about Finnish lessons, socialising etc. They may have groups you can join, so you don't have to be so lonely.

Re: Moving to Jyvaskyla
My husband works at the University of Jyvaskyla - so I am covered. But I do not think for everything where I wasn't here for at least 180 days of the pregnancy.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Did you find your orthodontist?
Does he have the right equipment for adjusting your braces or has he needed to improvise? I ask because my dentists have told me that dental technology is somewhat different between Finland and the US. They see this both from X-rays and from visual inspection of fillings. I can imagine it might be even more different in the case of dental appliances and the tools to adjust them.
IMO the Finnish dentists are more meticulous by routine, although I happen to have an outstanding US dentist, probably the best health care professional I have had of any stripe here.

As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.
Re: Moving to Jyvaskla
No I haven't set up my orthodontist or dentist yet. I am getting my residence permit tomorrow and hopefully my security number ID - then I can go from there. I need to see an orthodontist before the end of September.
I will let you know how it goes.
My dentist said the dentistry and orthodontic work here in Scandinavian countries is phenomenal - simply because they're more advanced and much of the research is done here prior to being displayed to North America.

Re: Moving to Jyvaskla
Greetings,
Congratulations on the birth of your baby boy. My husband will be starting a job at the University next year. I will follow him over in a few months. I know that you are busy with you new little one, but could you share with me any helpful advice for a wife of a University employee. We currently reside in the United States. Do you intend to work outside the home? What are the requirements of a spouse moving to Finland?
Thank you for any advice you can offer.
