too cold to go out with 1yr old?

Post by oompah18 » Thu Dec 17, 2009 11:32 pm

It hasn´t been this cold here for 5 years-it hasn´t risen over -18C today & it is forecast colder tomorrow. My 3,5 & 7 yr olds braved it today (eldest potkukelkka-ed to school like his classmates), & the youngest boys managed 15 mins sledding, but I haven´t taken littlest one out this cold. I know Finnish babies sleep in a pram outside in sleeping bags in this weather, but my littlest is carried under my coat in a kantoliina, on back or front, & even though she wears a wool kypärämyssy & a talvihattu on top, & we share a fleece poncho that has holes for both her head & mine, if you know what I mean, her face gets blown by the wind & it´s just a bit too nasty I think, but I just wondered what other mums do. Very few other young families here have been to playgroups this week, mainly citing the weather or flu anyway. But I just wanted your opinions!!! Am I risking it???
Thanks,
Allie

When my wife worked in the nursery if it was below -15 the kids didn't go outside. The limit was -10 for the babies. We've adopted the same rule for our 2 sons. Wind should be taken into account too.

Thanks, I thought there might be some unwritten rule that people used! What do the Sami people do, I wonder? or eskimos? (I am so uneducated really!) I read an article about life in Eastern siberia & only the kindergarten closed if it got to 50 below, otherwise life went on as normal!!!!! In total contrast, when I lived in Bahrain, the kids didn´t have to go out if it was over 40C & everyone was entitled to a day off if it got to 50C, officially. So, of course, it was always max 49C on the official weather report. The coldest I have experience was minus 32C in Levi about 8 years ago, & the hottest was 46C at 6.30am in Bahrain- I prefer the colder weather without a doubt!!!!! :D

Their limits are probably higher  Those limits I gave were from a Helsinki nursery.

Well, we shall keep the little one in then, also seeing as she had flu for 3 weeks, even though it has cleared up. Looks like more baking & "askartelu" for the kids then tomorrow, thanks, goodnight!

Allie, you are really something. Like some echo from 1950´s and 1960´s, and I salute that.

Well, people have to work to live, life has to go on. But it is a whole other thing what would be best to do if you actually have a choice.

I found this interesting about the Inuits:

“For the first couple of years, the children stay in the hood of their mother's amauti. When they are 2-3 years old they start wearing 'atajuqs' or combination suits. A combination suit is a piece of fur made into one suit with a hood, pants, mittens, and boots.”

I have been outside with our 1yr this week, it has been here locally -15 to -20 during the day, but we didn't stay longer then 15 min a time. He managed well and was well dressed, afterwards his hands, feet and neck didn't feel cold at all. I think it is always important to also keep an eye on the cheeks incase of frostbite.

Today and this weekend it'll be -10 to -15 here and I will go out with him to play, but for sure not longer then 45 min and I keep an eye on him how he is feeling and doing. But he just loves the snow, especially because he walks already.

Greetings

A mom

How did I forget the amauti?! I read about that some while ago on the seriously, serious baby-wearing site www.thebabywearer.com (am I allowed to post that link here? sorry if not  )
It is true though about how different peole dress. whenever I see kids in UK playing in the snow in a dress, tights & a "pretty" coat on top, without gloves, to look cute, I tend to get a bit enraged. When we visited UK at Easter last year, my boys wore their good, old, Lassi Suprafill haalarit, with balaclavas & decent gloves, & were still cold in the wind & snow (yes, Wokingham had snow then!!!) it´s a different sort of feeling, the damp UK snow!!! we did get some odd looks though
Anyway, maybe it´s just a girly thing, because I remember taking out all my boys when they were babies, on my back in a kantoliina, under a kantotakki, in all weathers, without feeling guilty! And she does have the full wardrobe of haalari, boots, hats, gloves etc, all in "cute", fluffy, girl colours, ie various shades of pink, which swore I would never do, after 3 boys!
Well, as she is my last one, I will get as much use out of my kantotakki as poss, & try & wear her outside a little more. Just got to find those rubber grip thingies with studs on to fix on my boots..........
bye bye
(Me, an echo from the byegone age? So true     you know me too well)
