Viikinmäki wastewater treatment plant

Post by irnbru » Sat Dec 19, 2009 3:20 pm

Would living near it be unpleasant?

Reading about it so far it seems to be state of the art, but one can't help but think there are 1 millions peoples turds floating around there some where :-)

Viikki seems to be a very up and coming area.

Why don't you schedule a visit? It's not free unless you're taking a school group, but you and 24 of your closest friends can share the cost.

They do have some basic information on the Helsingin Vesi website as well.

Do they have regularly scheduled tastings, like a winery?
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

You know what I'd love to take a visit but don't have 24 friends unfortunately. It would be interesting though. I'm basically interested in 2 things.

1. Does it smell? I went for a walk round there yesterday and it didn't but I wonder if it is different in summer.
2. Does it pollute the surrounding area.

Of course info from Helsingin Vesi will give one side of the story. I'm interested to hear from a local or an environmentalist type.

The mayor of our US city once scheduled a public tasting of output from the treatment plant. He wanted to prove that the breakdown had been completely repaired and he, for one, was happy to demonstrate.

This was not a new or state-of-the-art plant. Finland's are probably better. But to answer the original question: regardless of the outputs, the inputs are awfully ripe when you drive by on a summer day. I wouldn't live within about a mile of our local facility. Maye half-a-mile would be sufficient. Or three-quarters.
